About this listen
This Splash Read collection includes three historical fiction short stories about Ulysses S. Grant.
While Splash Read stories are enjoyed by kids of all ages, they were written to facilitate a conversation between a child and parent, or student and teacher. Each story introduces an influential person from history. Stories discuss life skills, challenges, problem-solving, and important issues. We’ve heard positive reviews from kids as young as first graders and as old as 10th graders.
These three stories are:
- "Ulysses Grant and the Horse That Would Not Be Tamed": Twelve-year-old Ulysses S. Grant discovers that he’s able to train even the most difficult horses. One racehorse owner comes to Ulysses in desperation, after the best trainers in the country have been unsuccessful.
- "Ulysses Grant and the Kentucky Downpour": A man pays teenager Ulysses S. Grant to drive his team of horses and carriage to pick up his daughters in Kentucky. Ulysses must navigate a storm on his trip.
- "Ulysses Grant Hears a Lie": On a busy day, shortly after he’s sworn in as president, Ulysses hears a lie. Always honest, the president encourages the truth over a lie.
