Story
Punk rocker, bird nerd and book lover Rob Bell had a full, happy life. He had a loving wife, a big-bottomed dog named Daisy and a career as a respected science journalist. But beneath the carefully cultivated air of machoism and the need to help other people, he struggled with mental health and a drug addiction that began as a means to self-medicate his illness. In 2015, he ended his life in New Zealand on a winter's night.

Self-help books like The Secret promise that we can tap in to the 'law of attraction' to control our destiny, simply by changing our thoughts. If we strip away the mystique, at the heart of this idea is a fundamental truth that is backed up by the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience: most of the things we want from life - health, happiness, wealth, love - are governed by our ability to think, feel and act; in other words, by our brain.

Structured into three sections - "belonging," "resistance," and "acceptance" - and informed by personal history, community stories, and deep research, Fat Girls in Black Bodies breaks down the myths, stereotypes, tropes, and outright lies we've been sold about race, body size, belonging, and health. Cox's razor-sharp cultural commentary exposes the racist roots of diet culture, healthism, and the ways we erroneously conflate body size with personal responsibility.

Multi-award-winning television writer and producer Georgia Pritchett knows a thing or two about anxiety. From worrying about the monsters under her bed as a child (Were they comfy enough?), to embracing womanhood (One way of knowing you have crossed from girlhood to womanhood is that men stop furtively masturbating at you from bushes and start shouting things at you from cars. It's a beautiful moment.) to being offered free gifts after an award ceremony (It was an excruciating experience. Mortifying.) worry has accompanied her at every turn.

Insightful, informative, revealing secrets
- By Suzann on 16-03-21
Summary
If you are the girl, the woman who feels like she is never enough, that she will never be as strong, as good, as capable, I am here to tell you that you are enough. I am here to tell you that while it shouldn’t have been your burden, you can write a different story.
Stronger will change what you think you know about strength and, most importantly, empower you to go on your own journey to discover what strength looks like for you.
Now a competitive amateur powerlifter who can lift over twice her own bodyweight, Poorna Bell is perfectly placed to start a crucial conversation about women’s strength and fitness, one that has nothing to do with weight loss. In Stronger she challenges the notions taught to us as girls, and examines how all of us can tap into our reservoir of inner strength to make us our strongest selves mentally and physically. Describing taking up weightlifting after the death of her husband, she shows how discovering her own strength helped her to find the confidence that physical pursuits can amplify - the confidence that has been helping men to succeed for centuries - and that women can find, too.
In these pages, Poorna tells not only her own story but those of a range of women, investigating intersections of race, age and social background. Part memoir, part manifesto, Stronger explodes old-fashioned notions and long-held beliefs about getting strong and explores the relationship between mental and physical strength.
Whether you’re into weightlifting, running, swimming, yoga or don’t consider yourself to be sporty at all, Poorna shows how finding strength can work for you, regardless of age, ability or background.

I can’t recommend this book enough
I don’t usually listen to audiobooks as they don’t hold my attention. I rarely read or listen to non fiction.
But this book - captured me from the start and kept me going. Nodding along with the things Poorna said that I have been ranting about, exclaiming at the things she put in to words that I had felt but never been able to express, heart breaking at grief, laughing at jokes and family stories, and really feeling as though I was with her on this journey of growth and strength.
But not only Poorna. Through this book, I was able to join the journeys of so many other women, from a vast variety of backgrounds.
And by the end I was looking at my own journey, with a tear in my eye. Recognising my strength, even though I don’t often feel it.

The book I didn't know I needed.
I was intrigued to read this book because I started to think about exercising 😱 (I am not a “sporty” person, and I felt like I needed to lose some lockdown weight).
It is one of the most inspirational books I have read. It told me so much that I didn't know but need to know. It is a must-read. Now I am thinking not about losing weight but about the importance of feeling stronger for myself.
There are so many messages from the book I want to share with my three young daughters and friends. I will be sending copies.
I loved hearing Poorna tell her story too. I will miss her voice my morning walks.

A really positive book that challenges both the boundaries we put in place for ourselves and those that are put in our way by others. Someone once said to me that physical strength is never a bad thing and this book expertly articulates the many benefits. Excellent narration by the author.

Very powerful with something for everyone
It's fair to say Poorna has 'lived it', but despite all this she is very positive about where her life is now. Her strength journey is useful for everyone and it has certainly inspired me to go back to the weights section of the local gym and get some coaching. More than that its the holistic benefits of the lifting life and the benefits it has brought her and what it will bring to others. She challenges outdated concepts of what is feminine, what is masculine and the damaging effects this has had for both genders, race and age. This isn't a training plan, it's something better, a mindset
