Summary

Vinnie has always been different. But Vinnie is a survivor....

A childhood accident robbed Vinnie of his memories, making him sensitive and anxious, and his difference soon attracted bullies. If it wasn’t for his family and his brother, Frank, Vinnie wouldn’t have survived.

But as the boys grow up, and after the devastating loss of their parents, Vinnie finds himself increasingly involved in violent situations whenever he’s with Frank. Is this the type of man he’s become, or can the love of a remarkable woman teach him to embrace life?

When Vinnie is accused of a terrible crime and looks set for a long stretch behind bars, fragments of his memory start to return and he begins to unravel his past.

Who was his mother? What kind of a man is his brother, Frank? And why does death surround them?

Things are not as they seem, but Vinnie can survive anything....

Ross Greenwood is back with this shocking, thrilling glimpse into the criminal underworld.

Critic reviews

"Move over Rebus and Morse; a new entry has joined the list of great crime investigators in the form of Detective Inspector John Barton. A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist." (Richard Burke)

"Ross Greenwood doesn’t write clichés. What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour." (Kath Middleton)

brilliant as always

You can never tell which way he is taking you in the story. Usually with an unexpected ending.

Such a good book. Brilliant story and the narrator is absolutely excellent. One of my favourites.

Characters and clever writing

Ross Greenwood’s characters are obviously defined a little from his previous employment as a prison officer and life. They are complex and believable, Well worth a read or a listen

Empathetic

The telling of the story in the first person enables the listener to be drawn in. With subtle changes affecting the protagonist we learn his history, often finding a paradox in the behaviour of the (anti???)hero. The plot is so very well thought out; each twist and turn takes one to places in our own psyche which are familiar, but also at the same time an anathema. Very clever, but the whole construct is a book that is unmissable. This is by far, the best of any novel he has written already. The book is simply fantastic.

I am still unsure as what to make of this novel

I cannot say I loved this novel. I can say, I liked it. Delicate and emotional issues were handled sensitively.
It is certainly worth one's time to read it or listen to. I am still unsure of the point of it all.

Well written but not enjoyable

I can’t recommend this book to anyone who has had contact with sex offenders, or anyone who want a ‘feel good’ listen. B

Absolutely fantastic

I've read almost all Ross Greenwood's books now. Never disappointed. He writes with such passion, relevance, honesty and understated humour. With David Thorpe narrating, it's like listening to one of your mates stories down the pub in so much as there is always a hint of good humour in his voice

What I particularly liked in this story is how he weaved characters from his other books into it. If you've not read them it won't matter or distract from the story. However if you have, then it will add an extra layer of richness to your listening experience

Fascinating

A sad but enthralling story upbringing and how decisions can change lives.
I found the author's final summery very interesting and moving. These are all-time stories, based on experience and areas of life that the majority of readers will hopefully never experience. As always, well read with the correct accent.

Great read.

If you like a book that constantly challenges you and makes you think, as well as entertaining you - read/listen! Good ending and very good, insightful, thought provoking words at the end from RG.
