Pleasant surprise

Having watched and really enjoyed the original TV series, I was unsure whether I would like this version. I was pleasantly surprised as I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Each of the 4 ‘sections’ gave an account of the different experiences the survivors had to go through. The pace was just right and the narration was well performed.

My only ‘gripe’ was that it ended too soon. In my opinion it would have been better value to have 6 sections and only 2 performances rather than the 3 on offer.

Could have been much more

Overall a medium performance.
The start of the book was very promising but the predictable and mediocre story was a let down after about 1/3 into the book.
Potential buyers should also be aware that the last 35 min is a sort of making off.
The acting ranges from very good to poor. of course it does not help if the actors get stupid lines to read wich does not happen that often but when it does it drags a lot of the story down with it.
With a little more effort and a better,gripping story ( where you would care what happens with the characters) this could have been great. As it stands, it is mediocre at best.

A Great Audio Drama

Really enjoyed this audio drama. Reminded me of the TV series in the 70's and nice to see some of those actors back to lend their voices. I see 2 more seasons are available in Audible so I'm going to get those now, but I believe there are at least 9 seasons available ! Any chance of these all becoming available on Audible anytime soon ?

Good addition to Terry Nation's Survivors canon

Big Finish is normally a guarantee of a quality production, yet again they have successfully resurrected a 70's iconic series (Their Prisoner series is excellent). Firstly I did not feel this was four stories but one longer arc with intertwining elements, but a small criticism of description rather than content. The cast and production were excellent, the story was certainly a launch point to later instalments and as a stand alone felt very much like Part 1. I didn't agree with other comments on technical issues, i listened on headphones and didn't have any problem with the technical quality. I do agree on value, for a audible credit was good value, for £40 CD or download less so. I'll be downloading the next instalment to see what happens. Full marks for use of what sounded like a very close adaptation of the original score, something they seemed unable to do with the Prisoner.

listened during lockdown

really did enjoy listening to this during lockdown, yes I know a bit ironic but took me back to when this was on the TV years ago
cannot wait for the next series 2 downloaded today to start listening.

Brilliant cast, terrible sound engineering

An interesting concept & great cast, ruined by the worst sound engineering I've ever heard in an audiobook.

Not just some parts being too quiet (some of this was obviously a directorial choice to show people being further away or muffled) but voices clearly not being picked up properly when recorded so no matter how hard you turned it up the words weren't clearly audible.

It's almost like they used really old school microphones that would only record when the actor's mouth was directly in front of them so the sound kept dropping out.

Very disappointing as this was otherwise and interesting production.

Another issue was the choice to use original cast actors in the same roles. A nice idea but rather confusing when you realise a character who sounds like they're in their 50/60s is actually meant to be in their 20/30s.

Also worth bearing in mind is that the last 30 minutes or so of the book is interviews with the cast. They are interesting but it means the book is even shorter than it seems.

If you have an audible account & can get the book for £6 or so it's reasonable but please don't even consider paying the £40 (!!!) they want for it. I don't see ago they could justify that for a 4 hour book even if everything else were perfect!

Terror from another angle

A welcome way into, Terry Nation's nightmare world through the folks at Big Finish. Fast, and haunting with a real feel of the first series of the TV show, A wonderful reintroduction to Survivors, lifting the lid on just a couple of the millions of stories that died in the plague. With a brilliant script and stellar work from the cast, a must listen for those who like a look behind the curtain of what if, or a glimpse into a possible future.
