Get the one without his son in it

The original text of this book is great but stick with the original as this version has a lot of interruptions from the author's son on how he couldn't manage his kids. It really takes the shine off it. To be entirely fair, it might get better but I bailed out after a couple of chapters and downloaded the original instead

Easily my top non-fictional read of all time!

Amazing how the principles in Stephen Covey’s applies in 2020. This are timeless teachings. I finished listening with a new mindset to my life, essentially a changed person.
The narration by the father and Son ( a wonderful addition) makes this audio book a more valuable purchase

A must read book

Content rich book. There are several examples and real world applications in this book. This is the 1st book everyone should read. Two things I am going to take from this book is focusing on my circle of influence and increasing my production capabilities (pc)

an excellent guide to a more fulfilled happier me

listening to this audiobook and reading the paperback got me thinking and sensing more. Stephen and Sean Covey have great narrating voices to listen to - a calm clear delivery of their wisdom and credible anecdotes.

I shall dip in again for years to come to refresh their tutorials.

Very helpful book

Probably the best self help style book I’ve heard and although I don’t agree with all content, the principle of the book are very strong and helpful.

A good foundation of principles to help structure life

I wanted to listen to this book but I was also very sceptical. I have managed to build a good career over the last 9 years. However, I have faced professional and personal challenges. In the last three years I have began to explore various books to help me understand myself and to develop.

Coveys delivery style isn’t always perfect. I struggled with his diction at times.

I felt that some of the anecdotes told my both Covey and his son may have been made up for effect. However, I have no real proof of this. It is purely speculation and my part. As such, I removed those thoughts from my mind and dealt only with the facts at hand.

What I like with this book is it encourages accountability which is vital for any process to work. It does not use anger at the system, your parents or any other uncontrollable factors to drive your success and justify your shortcomings.

I like that Covey recognises he is not the guru behind any of this and openly admits he adopts his principles from religion, philosophy and other proposed theories.

I have previously read Jordan Peterson which I didn’t like because I felt that he presents an approach opposite to the above in various ways. However, I have read the chimp paradox by Dr. Steve Peters. Like Covey, Peters talks about paradigms, the need to reframe them and the accountability for your behaviour. I have already implemented parts of Peters book into my own thinking and approach to life which has improved my life along with my family, friends and colleagues. This means I have already began implementing some of the principles Covey promotes here. I now intend to integrate more of those principles in my life.

I think that this book works for any person but it is a particular benefit to men who are fathers. The role of fathers has changed over the decades. The authors point that you can not be a career-centric person, a religion-centric person etc. and the importance of balance has allowed me to be kinder to myself and more realistic with my time.

Lastly, I am an atheist. Covey touches on his faith sporadically through the book. It’s a clear influence on his life. Going into the book I worried how this might impact my experience of reading it negatively. However, as these are principles it is not problematic. Principles are not hard and fast rules. Therefore, you can apply his desire to meditate on holy scripture with a pastime or process that meets your core values and delivers the same outcome for you as scripture does for Covey.
