Summary
Welcome to Alderley, a magnificent mansion in the heart of the West Country where a grand house party is taking place. The preparations have been made, the guests have been invited, and the staff are on hand. What could possibly go wrong? Let the entertainment begin.
The theft of the diamond necklace and the antique pistols might all be explained, but the body in the lake - that really was a puzzle. 'Don't expect me to solve anything,' Inspector Wilkens announced modestly when he arrived to sort out the unpleasantness. And at a gathering that included English aristocracy, foreign agents in disguise, a ravishing baroness, a daring jewel thief, a Texas millionaire and, of course, the imperturbable butler, it was going to take some intricate sleuthing to uncover who killed whom and why.

Brilliant
Foreign dignitaries , American billionaires, Spies, a jewel thief and a baroness among others all converge at a house party where a murder is committed enter Inspector Wilkins and Sergeant Leather. A most enjoyable whodunnit. Cornelius Garrett, as always, brilliant!

Flawless. Pure fun and delight!
I savoured every word of this book. It was brilliant, witty, expertly poking fun at a number of legendary fictional detectives, and full of intriguing characters and unexpected twists and turns. I've read The Burford Family series many, many times and cannot honestly imagine a better collection of works in the genre of English country house murder mysteries. Simply flawless!
Cornelius Garret is a genius. I love his reading of this series - he truly brings the characters even more alive than the book itself.

Good elements
I loved the vintage feel and the narrator was good but it was hard to follow the plot and all the different characters.

Great period whodunnit!
I loved the story, characters (especially liked Gerry/Geraldine and Jane) and the narrator just brought it all to life. I’ve now bought the next two in the series. Keep them coming Mr James Anderson 👍🏼

Great impulse buy
I really enjoyed this. I spotted it while browsing, and was intrigued. The narration was excellent, and very engaging. I listened to the whole book in one session (breaks for food excepted) and was engaged the whole way through, even joining in with the unveiling of the villains at the end! Happy to say I was mostly right, and thoroughly enjoyed the twist at the end. Will definitely be getting the other two in the series as well.

Such fun!
Great story and narration! Kept me guessing until the very end and a bit of historical verisimilitude made it all the more intriguing.

Superbly Narrated
This was second read, after the '39 Cufflinks'. It provided the relief and easy read/listen that I needed after a dense historical novel. I liked the way several threads enriched the novel, each in their own way engaging. It meant there was a complexity that was worthwhile. That said I find novel's reliance on small minutes of time a bit of a trial, and this took away a smidgen of pleasure - but that is me. The narrator is one I have come to trust as well as enjoy, so much that I will consider any audio-book that he takes charge of. He is intelligent and faithful to the text. I have the third in this series ready to read/listen to and look forward to. As a helpful note, all three mysteries heavily involve the upper floor of a country house, and each paper novel has a floor plan of this and which guests occupy each room. I find these invaluable and help me more easily imagine the action that takes place. Enjoy the novel and the detective; Wilkins; "Sanguine, very sanguine".

Enjoyable period romp
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, a jolly good murder mystery. Evoking days gone by.
What other book might you compare The Affair of the Bloodstained Egg Cosy to, and why?
Probably more Blandings than Whimsey due to the humour.
Which character – as performed by Cornelius Garrett – was your favourite?
Undoubtedly Inspector Wilkens. A master of charaterisation. All the characters were easily visualised.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes, but I leave it till I'm having a relaxing bath and listen then.
