About this listen

Are you sick and tired of people walking all over you, desperate to discover how to stand up for yourself? Or, are you frustrated with your regular outbursts and wish you could better control your emotions?

You're not alone. Being too passive, or too aggressive, is a common struggle in today's society.

And yet, there are people in your life who always speak their mind and get their way, while still having the respect and admiration of their peers. What's their secret? How do they do it? The answer is assertiveness.

Assertiveness, the foundation of this audiobook, is about effectively communicating your needs and setting boundaries, while respecting the needs and boundaries of others. The Art of Assertiveness provides you with a detailed blueprint to help navigate the tricky waters of interpersonal relationships in both personal and professional environments.

In this audiobook, you will discover:

  • How you can take control of your emotions using only your breath
  • A powerful method to calm people down in heated conversations and open them up to your point of view
  • How one study showed the importance of body language, and how you can use this to your advantage
  • How refocusing a statement around one simple word can completely change the outcome of a conversation
  • A simple exercise to help you increase your self-confidence and self-worth
  • A fun game that will have you saying 'no' in no time

The Art of Assertiveness isn't just another self-help audiobook with dry theories and platitudes. It comes complete with a collection of practical, actionable exercises that will immediately improve your communication skills and confidence.

Enjoyable and informative

This book was great! It was really well laid out and easy to follow. I've started going through the exercises in the third part of the audiobook now and already starting to notice a difference in myself. If you're looking to overcome past passive or aggressive behaviours, I highly recommend giving this book a listen!

COMPREHENSIVE. GOOD THEORY/PRACTICAL BALANCE.

This is a very comprehensive manual, describing some potent techniques that can equally be applied in our business or personal lives. It covers an impressive range of topics, from active listening to meta-conversations, micro-expressions, mindfulness, and proxemics, but all explained in simple-to-understand language. As suggested by the subtitle of the book, this is very much a guide to achieving our goals and not letting people walk all over us. Yet, counter-intuitively, it emphasises the importance of making ourselves vulnerable, with I FEEL statements, before presenting our NEEDS. It strikes just the right balance between theory and practice, with lots of great exercises included: I especially liked the 30-day assertiveness challenge. The author admits that there will occasionally be interactions where assertiveness is not appropriate or effective, but he outlines clearly how and when to modify the approaches we use, to suit a wide variety of different situations, and even reminds us of the importance of being prepared to follow through, when necessary.
