Summary

A fresh start in a place you hate. Even tougher with a killer watching....

Jane Osborne left Cambridge and vowed she'd never return. An unexpected twist of fortune results in DC Goodhew bringing her back to the remnants of her old life and a confrontation with the man who killed her sister.

Meanwhile a burning car on the outskirts of Cambridge leads to the discovery of the body of its owner, Paul Marshall. There seems nothing to connect it to either a recent assault, or to Jane Osborne, until a shocking discovery rips Goodhew's investigation apart.

Alison Bruce was born in Surrey in 1966 and moved to Cambridge in 1998. She has learnt about Cambridge and East Anglia from researching her two previous non-fiction books, Cambridgeshire Murders (Sutton Publishing) and The Billingtons, Death in the Family (also published by Sutton). She is married with two small children and enjoys horse riding and dancing, when not working on her new crime fiction series featuring DC Gary Goodhew.

Continuing DC Goodhew Saga

The DC Goodhew series is set in Cambridge and follows the travails of somewhat unorthodox DC Gary Goodhew. Dedicated detective and insomniac Goodhew has two new cases to resolve whilst trying to stay on the good side of his DI. These books are thoroughly enjoyable, DC Goodhew himself is a very likeable chap and a decent one (unlike his professional rival DC Kincaid). Continuing threads from previous books make it worth reading them in order and enjoying the growing persona of Gary. Well narrated. In this particular book, there were some mistakes in the narration which had not been edited out and whilst no big problem does momentarily break the spell. Highly recommended for lovers of this genre and eagerly await book 6.

Needs a bit of editing

I really enjoy Alison Bruces books. I have written one after the other.
I think a technical problem has slipped by on this one as Jonathan Broadbent narration is slightly interrupted now and then with a few stumbles in the state. Overall, it did not spoil the high quality of the story, and the plot

excellent cambridge based dc goodhew series.

only complaints in a generally good paced story with characters that remain consistent throughout each book - frequent repetition from narrator because of bad editing. also, the end which seemed a bit rushed, chucking in a character who hadn't been much in evidence for most of story.

Good story

would have been better if sentences weren't glitched and repeated, tech edit problems through it, ignored it mainly, still a good story.

Complicated but very worthwhile

The editing of this book is really quite bad - there are many places where Jonathan Broadbent starts a sentence, realises he has used an incorrect phrasing or nuance so repeats the sentence, it wasn't really a problem, but I did feel that the editor had let the book down. ..... Anyway! ... I enjoyed this complex and interesting story, I do like the main characters - Gary, Sue, Gary's grandma and Bryn. This makes me become totally immersed in the situation and means that I get every enjoyment from the novel. Very cleverly written, and an excellent plot.

Production values not up to par

Another brilliant book in this series, with excellent narration, highly recommended. Just one comment about lazy production or editing - occasionally the narrator reads a line, then reads it again slightly differently with a different emphasis or tone, with the obvious assumption that a producer will listen to it and edit out the first version. But this hasn’t happened. It’s annoying for the listener, and unfair on the narrator. Surely a producer should listen to the recording before uploading it for sale? However, don’t let that put you off, it’s an excellent book and very well read.

Typically clever plot

I've really enjoyed these books but was a little sad at the DC Kincade sage twist- it simply isn't credible & therefore irritating. Actually almost puts me off reading the next one though I probably will in the hope the author realises her mistake & puts it right.

Poor editing spoiled the book for me

Story was ok but the editing of the recording was shocking. So many times the editor missed the narrator restarting a sentence, it was almost embarrassing. Not the best narrator as all the characters sound the same but I have gotten used to him as I have listened to the whole series so far

Let down by poor editing

What a pity. Great story but although the narrator was good in terms of his voices and intonation, there were significant stumbles and pauses which should have been edited out.
