Summary

The authors of Prelude to Dune have written the triumphant climax to the history of the Dune universe: the story most eagerly anticipated by its listeners.

The universal computer mind Omnius has retreated to its last stronghold, where it plots a devastating new strategy that could undo the victories of the Butlerian Jihad. The surviving Titans are creating new lieutenants to do their will when at last they return to attack the human beings they once ruled. In the years of peace too many of mankind have forgotten that their machine enemies never sleep. But some have forgotten nothing - and learned from their triumphs. The brilliant military commander Vorian Atreides, son of a Titan, has the gift of long life from his terrifying father and knows the machines' minds better than any man alive. Norma Cenva, the genius inventor of humanity's best defences, dreams of new discoveries that will make man invincible. And on the windswept desert planet Arrakis, the power that can give them victory waits.

Critic reviews

"If you're familiar with the Dune universe it is oddly compelling. This is a successful space opera that spins in a few genuine surprises." (Locus)

Completes the back story

This is an epic. What kept me going was the little nuggets you got on how main characters in Dune came into being.e.g. The Bene Gessirit and their skills, The Space navigators,Mentats, Freman etc. What you do need is some stamina as the book is so long. It did keep me engaged but it took me a week. . Scott Brick as always is a brilliant narrator especially for this kind of Sci-Fi and kept me coming back. If you want to know the backstory for Dune then I recommend. It doesn't have the poetic philosophical style of Frank Herbert and is more on the action style of sci-fi but suits the purpose.

Truly epic sci-fi trilogy!

Superb third instalment. The trilogy as a whole is a definite must read / listen to any sci fi fans. So many complex situations, characters and ideas which are as relevant as ever. Belongs firmly in the ranks of the greats - original Dune trilogy, Asimov’s Foundation etc.

probably my favourite sci fi trilogy

A great finish to an amazing trilogy. Satisfying yet guy wrenching. The perfect end to this particular arc in the dune universe. I think it's definitely a must for all major sci fi fans.

Great conclusion

I have enjoyed this series more than most of the original books apart from Dune itself. I was impressed how so many of the seeds for key personals, organisations and traditions are set in motion in these books.

Brings the Dune history together.

As usual Scott Brick is excellent. The Battle of Corrin is a must read or listen for the fans of the Dune books. The authors have taken all the historical facts talked about in Dune and given them a plausible reasoning. The feud between the Atreidies and the Harkonens, the founding of the BG and Spacing Guild. The beginning of the Corrino dynasty and many others. A long story but worth the effort. Frank Herbert must be proud of where his son has taken the Dune Universe. There are a couple of glitches in the recording but they do not detract from the overall sense of history portrayed in this wonderful work of fiction that does more than any of their other books to tie the characters in the Frank Herbert Dune Universe in to a complete story.

Great book

Great book. Shame there was quite a few times the recording skipped, but it did not ruin the story.

First of many

this is my first Anderson, Herbert book and I'm in... Absolutely fantastic writing... having read Dune books 1 to 4 and countless Warhammer novelsI it took mere moments to be drawn into the story.
The narration by Scott Brick is impressive and well chosen as its clear that the narrator enjoys the story as much as the listener and there are no moments when you feel pulled out of the story because of incredulous narration.
Next book coming up.

Another win for Brian and Kevin,

Loved the book from start to finish, some recording glitches though the intruige, machinations and question of what humanity means, as well as Scott Brick's brilliant delivery make this a fantastic piece of the dune saga.
