Summary

SECRETS NEVER STAY BURIED FOR LONG...

In the picturesque seaside town of St Ives, Detective Sergeant Sophie Keane is a pillar of the community. Between the occasional collar and lazy weekends spent on the beach, it seems a perfect life. But for Sophie, the golden sands and crystal waters hide a dark secret, one that’s lain buried for twenty years.

When a body turns up on the opening night of a glittering new art gallery on the seafront, the town is left shaken—especially Sophie, who recognises the killer’s style but knows that what she fears just couldn’t be possible…

With a killer on the loose, everyone’s a suspect—especially newcomer Gabriel Rowe, who seems to have settled in far too quickly for her liking. For Sophie, he’s guilty until proven innocent…

Suspense is peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced mystery, set amidst the spectacular Cornish landscape.

Beautiful setting adds to atmospheric story

Enjoyed continuing the series. Lighter touch more romantic than other series. Just wish they were longer I would like to know the characters better.

The story captured me from start to finish

I like L J Ross but this was brilliant and had me focusing on every word, I thought the plot was inspired and the way everything came together at the end of the book took my breath away. This book had everything, it is a very good thriller together with drug smuggling all tied up in a big bow of romance, brilliant.

The Summer Mysteries are a lovely trio of books

I've listened to all three of the summer mysteries and have to say all three were very enjoyable, more so because the characters overlap somewhat within the distinct stories and they share the same overall setting. I enjoyed the Creek (2) the best, it was the one I started with because I found the premise appealing. However, be aware that listening in the wrong order did cause me an issue with a spoiler (guessing something) by listening to book 3 before book 1. My own fault, it didn't spoil the enjoyment of the stories, they are very accessible.

I have listened to one of the books L J Ross is better known for, DCI Ryan, and if memory serves me its a slightly different style to this trio. The three summer mysteries (Creek, Cove, Bay) seem borderline cozy mystery to me, with the short length, some amateur sleuthing, the summertime feel of the Cornish setting and a distinct romance in each book. I really loved them and I also think the narrator, Clare Corbett, was a great choice for the narrator. She is very easy to listen to.

All in all, I wish there were more of these, but they are charming as a set of 3.

Clever plot

Ms Ross has deep knowledge of police procedure and the criminal justice system which she has woven with excellent characters and a clever plot. This is not just chick lit for a summer read on the beach although there are traces of this and the plot isn’t as weaving and twisted as those in the DCI Ryan novels. I loved this short book but was irritated by the reader a little, especially when she portrayed small children.

Romance in St Ives

A lot of romance and not so much mystery. Rather short and finishes in a hurry.
