Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Where ghosts tread, black feathers fall...

When Annie marries widower Edward Stonehouse and arrives at Guardbridge, his estate on the Yorkshire moors, she thinks she has finally put darkness behind her.

She is mistaken.

Edward's sister, Iris, still lives in the family home. A taxidermist and medium, she urges Annie to watch out for black feathers - claiming that they mark the spot where a spirt has visited.

At first, Annie dismisses her warnings. But, before long, she begins to feel haunted.

What exactly happened to Edward's first wife? Why is Iris so disturbed?

And should Annie really be watching for signs from the dead - or is she the one being watched?

SET ON THE YORKSHIRE MOORS IN THE 1800S, THE BLACK FEATHERS IS A GHOSTLY TALE OF MAGIC AND WICKEDNESS.

Critic reviews

"Chilling, haunting and incredibly moving" (Barbara Copperthwaite)

"The perfect book for a cold winter’s night...an immersive gothic tale, dark and mysterious, in which it seems one must fear the living as much as the dead. Truly haunting!" (Anita Frank)

Excellent gothic story

Wonderfully descriptive and true to gothic literature with the twists and turns in the plot. Beautifully read in a manner fitting of the book.

Black Feathers

A new author for me and glad I bought it when I saw it advertised.
Brilliantly narrated and a pleasure to listen.
Not so much a ghost story but more psychological, how manipulation and imagination can betray the mind and lead a person to fear and doubt.
The "ghost" was obvious, and the ending was beautiful. I thought thats the way it would end and glad it didn't disappoint.
Glad I took a chance with this one, 5 stars 🌟

spooky mystery

Full of atmosphere and I didn't guess the secret until near the end. Once again the author has identified feminist issues in a Victorian male World. not new, but well done.

A haunting and physiological page turner

From the moment I read what this book was about, I instantly felt intrigued to read it and I’m so glad I did. The setting of the mid 19th century elevated the story in a way which captured the ghost story element perfectly. The characters were all so relatable and the twists and turns throughout the book, were woven in so well I didn’t see them coming.

Overall I loved reading this book and I will highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to sit in a quiet corner and become completely entranced by this book.

5 Star all round

Deliciously atmospheric - a masterclass on mounting tension

What a satisfying listen. Rebecca Netley is a master of this genre. Brooding, unsettling atmosphere in a big, isolated mansionhouse in the Yorkshire Moors in the 1800s. The creepy, menacing atmosphere builds into mounting unease as the deeply satisfying plot unfolds. Brilliant! Excellent narration too.

Another fabulous ghostly tale!

I loved Rebecca Netley's previous novel 'The Whistling' so I was excited to hear she was coming out with another ghost story. I was not disappointed! Interesting and well developed characters and a spooky setting. I hope the author continues with the genre. She has a talent for the spooky and the macabre.

Gripping

Really enjoyed this book. It was a bit of a slow starter but once it got going it had me on the edge of my seat. I liked the whistling and this book is just as good.
