Left hanging at the end amid too many bodies
I’ve listened to a number of the author's books and while this is an interesting, if somewhat implausible story, I never felt as engaged as I had with previous novels. The book starts well with an intriguing mystery as to how the bones of a young woman, who went missing on holiday in Thailand, ended up in a field in England. However, the narrative thereafter goes off in different directions and latterly deteriorates in a series of mass of killings. I also grew weary of the clichés of the genre: maverick cop, who is taken off the case because of going out on a limb; conflict with superiors, broken marriage etc., etc., but worst of all the story ends unresolved on a cliffhanger, presumably with the hope of selling the next book, but it short-changes the reader.
The narrator is excellent as usual.

Disappointing
I downloaded this one based on all the good reviews but I have to say I'm very surprised this book is averaging over 4 stars? The storyline is ok but very unrealistic. For example the very powerful, rich and well connected 'bad guys' are so paranoid two of them only call each other on a mobile at midnight in a soundproof reinforced concrete room but then leave the tools they've used to murder victims in an unlocked shed in the garden? Also the first half of the book had US slang and measurements and then switch to old UK imperial. Trying not to give specifics here so not to spoil it. The book felt like it had a ghost writer for parts of it? Also the book is read as the protagonist's memoirs which I felt took away a part of the storytelling. First book in this series and it will be my last I'm afraid.

Disappointing
I found the writing style simplistic and the author used cliché after cliché. The story itself lacked any sort of mystery and I find the protagonist one dimensional. Sorry to be harsh!

Another great chapter for Ray Mason
I enjoyed the pace tjis book is read at. there are no prolonged unecessary detailed descriptions. I loved the mix of established characters and new ones. This book has left me wanting to here more.

Disappointing
I am a big fan of Simon Kernick so saved this for a holiday listen. The characters are good as ever and the plot develops nicely but in the end there is no resolution of anything. Very unsatisfactory. I like some unresolved matters to lead into the inevitable sequel but absolutely nothing is resolved and I feel that it is just a way of making me buy the sequel, which I will not probably bother with. Much preferred his tighter style and plotting in earlier books.

Awesome
I listened to this in practically one sitting...who wants to watch TV anyway? I adore Paul Thornley's narrative and once again he drew me in and wouldn't let go.
Fab characters, slightly predictable story but still looking forward to the next...hurry!!

A great fast-paced thriller..!
I really enjoyed this one. So much so, I immediately put the sequel on pre-order!
This was the first Kernick novel for me, but definitely won't be my last. I really enjoyed the characters - especially Mason and Boyd. Many surprises await the reader, as well as some rather scary villans, and plenty of twists. Can't recommend this one enough!

What's next?
You can't just stop there Mr Kernick. Fast paced, well up to his usual stand, a book to keep you hooked from page 1 to the last one. A body count higher than Midsomer!!

very disappointing
This book started really well, the narrator is excellent and the story draws you in - despite the rather improbable body count - but it never ended........ I would not like to spoil the book for another listener, but the "cliff hanger" ending left the impression that the author hadn't really thought about finishing the book, had reached the required number of words and simply stopped. I'm not sure I will bother with a sequel - imagine if that also ends so abruptly. Rather like a soap opera.

Unfinished!
Enjoyed this audiobook, but felt let down by the "non-ending".
I've purchased many of Simon Kernick's audiobooks so surprised that this book appears unfinished.
Narrator great though.
