Summary

THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION, FULLY UPDATED WITH NEW MATERIAL

A lavishly reimagined tenth anniversary edition of the first novel in the sensational Bone Season series, by the Sunday Times and New York Times-bestselling author of The Priory of the Orange Tree.

Welcome to Scion. No safer place.

The year is 2059. For two centuries, the Republic of Scion has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in Europe.

In London, Paige Mahoney holds a high rank in the criminal underworld. The right hand of the ruthless White Binder, Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare and formidable kind of clairvoyant. Under Scion law, she commits treason simply by breathing.

When Paige is arrested for murder, she meets the mysterious founders of Scion, who have designs on her uncommon abilities. If she is to survive and escape, Paige must use every skill at her disposal – and put her trust in someone who ought to be her enemy.

Critic reviews

'In this special edition of her critically acclaimed debut, Samantha Shannon performs the remarkable feat of improving upon the original beloved text. The story is impossibly richer and more insightful, assuringly accessible, more moving than ever, and glitters with exclusive content. The Bone Season is why fantasy exists. This is a hypnotic journey that crackles with dreamlike energy. Of all the Oxfords that literature has conjured, Shannon’s Sheol I intrigues and terrifies me the most. Her London is a fever dream. And I would linger in the aether forever if it meant spending longer with Paige Mahoney and Arcturus Mesarthim. Darkly thrilling, and dense with inventive detail, this lyrical dreamscape demands your presence. Come, dreamers - I dare you to lose yourselves in this one.' (London Shah, award-winning author of the Light the Abyss series)

'Epic, surprising, and impeccably imagined, The Bone Season seamlessly melds a near-future dystopian world, with high fantasy stakes, and a truly unique brand of magic. Perfect for those who enjoy intricate plots and eclectic casts of nuanced characters.' (Kate Dylan, author of Mindwalker)

Captivating and disappointing

Samatha Shannon has put together a great story line, with complex and delightful universe building. In many ways she has done the “hard part” of fantasy novels really well - but - the main character is (and remains throughout the book) irritating. The character is maybe written for a young adult audience, but I found the character to be frustrating to follow. The book is well read and put together, but I won’t be continuing the series which is disappointing as I’ve love Shannon’s other work :)

Exemplary!

I’ve been obsessed with Paige and Warden since first reading THE BONE SEASON in 2013, so listen to the newly revised 10th Anniversary edition on audiobook has been an incredible experience! Samantha Shannon has taken an incredible book and made it exemplary! Honestly, it’s been my favourite series for a decade now and I’m even more obsessed. I cannot wait for the revised versions of the next books!!!

God it’s dull

Look this book wasn’t for me but I got through to the end. I’ve read various reviews since finishing it which compared it to harry potter when it first came out. It’s nothing like Harry Potter, that’s not a criticism but just an observation. What it is like is “beauty and the beast” with lots of emoting with added clairvoyance and maybe a bit of “fifty shades” but without the sex. If that’s your thing go for it.
I can’t argue it’s not well written but it’s very much a female centric take on SF/fantasy. By this I mean the main character spends ages in emotional turmoil about situations where a male author would have had the character move on. For instance in the book our hero is in a life and death situation and has the means to easily despatch a character who has tortured her and her friends - does she get on with and shoot the enemy, reader she does not. It’s a bit like the long drawn out fight scenes in action movies. Just there to fill time. Much better to use the Indiana Jones method and shoot the swordsman.

I gave up

Ten hours in and I gave up. I felt no empathy with any of the characters, and although I tried I couldn't enjoy the story.
