Summary

Everyone is hiding a secret. One of them is murder.

The book club was her idea, of course.

It was her way into our group. A chance to get close.

I knew from the day she arrived that she couldn't be trusted.

And I was right.

Alice didn't come to the village for peace and quiet.

She came for revenge.

A deliciously addictive psychological thriller about a book club that unravels dark and scandalous secrets between one circle of neighbours. The perfect for fans of Big Little Lies and The Rumour.

Loved it!

Kept me guessing right to the end, found it really gripping, listened well past my bedtime to get to the end which is always a good sign! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

A bit too cosy a mystery for me

I liked the premise, reviews and narration were good but it all fell a bit flat for me very quickly and I gave up.

I think I guessed the motive for the attempted murder very quickly, but then it was made very obvious, so unless there was an amazing twist that I did not hang on for, it just seemed a bit dull and unbelievable.

I also did not care for the story being told also from the perspective of the incomer to the village or her backstory of having some sort of psychological problem that meant she found it very hard to mix with people and they found her "creepy" and she knew this, as it just made me feel sorry for her.

No spoilers, but I am presuming she was the stalker and would be murderer and I just felt sorry for her as she was written with no social skills as if perhaps she was on the spectrum as opposed to being a manipulative, scheming mastermind bent on revenge.

Perhaps I did not listen to enough of the book, or read too much into it, but it began to feel uncomfortable for me as opposed to thrilling, intriguing and ultimately entertaining.

Life is too short to listen to an audiobook which is making you feel a bit queasy, so returning and hoping the next one will be more my cup of tea.

ok read but not the best. I enjoyed the ending but it lost it's way for me in the middle.

Slow start but intriguing story

I nearly gave up on this book but as it was our Book Club book I persevered. Glad I did. I wish each chapter was intrigued with a chapter heading stating who's perspective it was as it switched between characters.

Disappointing, forgettable

It's not great. It feels like this book was not planned, and minimal research has gone into it. The ending especially felt rushed. This book and storyline had potential, but overall disappointing

Could have been good

The story could have been good and I kept reading hoping that somehow the issues with the Emily/ Alice character would be resolved. Maybe she had multiple personality disorder ? But this was never stated so we had to somehow accept that a woman who was socially inept, with out friends, could by virtue of moving to a different place suddenly transform into someone who had no problems inserting herself into the life of this group of people and manipulating them with cunning and deceit. Then we have to accept that she had the where with all to delve into people’s lives and backgrounds to learn their secrets. Secrets hidden from their closest friends and families but not her!
The problem with the Emily/ Alice character ruined the book for me and I would not recommend it.

Poor ending

Started strong and I enjoyed that it was from different character perspectives however fell majorly flat towards the end and a disappointing (and dare I say, predictable) ending.

Ending was a let down

Most enjoyed this book but it just got a little ridiculous towards the end . Hard to believe that a wean who suspected someone was trying to kill her , walks into the bedroom of her killer , by her own choice . A bit silly!
