Summary

Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day.

It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica.

But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history.

Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Sensing the McGregors and townspeople are keeping terrible secrets, Isla plans to discover the truth.

But the closer Isla comes to uncovering answers, the more the danger mounts. And with a dense cover of snow now blanketing the town, all chance of escape might already be gone.

Fantastic experience

Great listen/read
Mystery thriller full of red herrings, twists and turns from start to finish and keeping you on the edge of your seat, can start off slowly as you get to know the characters especially the main protagonist Isla but definitely worth it, when the plot starts to really kick off it does so phenomenally and doesn’t calm down until the very end, highly recommend

Brilliant

This book did not disappoint
It had so many twists I would never have worked out the ending. It was so good. I listened in 2 days. I’m not usually keen on the ozzy accent but The narrator was very good with the Scottish accent too. I felt it was the right voice for the story in the end. Highly recommend

Started out great...

The story started out great, quite gripping...but then, the plot became a bit ridiculous...I was like 'Really???'. Good effort though

Terrible accents

I couldn’t even concentrate on the story. The “Scottish” accents were like some weird Irish/Aussie/Indian mash up.

Shame as I liked the idea of the story.

Good storyline but the Scottish accent not the best

The Scottish accent was more Irish than Scottish. The story line was good but rather spoiled by the accent.

New author..

Having been a fan of Karin Slaughter for a while, this book was an audible recommendation...Not having read anything by this author before, I didn't have any pre-formed expectations. The novel itself was a really good listen...a storyline with more twists and turns than a rubiks cube! I thoroughly enjoyed it, every chapter. And whilst it may be churlish of me, I had to drop a star for the narration. A pleasant voice, but the many mis-pronunciations drives me mad. Place names, "pasties", doola (American, NOT Scottish) etc. So simply corrected by a google search...therefore no excuses. If you're narrating a book based in a different country, please do the research and get the local knowledge correct. Please. It's frustrating and spoils what would otherwise be 5 stars all round.

A page turner.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was brilliantly read and as it was the first of Anni Taylors books that I've read I will be looking for more. Great storyline and very evocative of the environment in which it's set.
