Obvious but crucial advice we’ll all forget from time to time.

I found this book to be a great refresher on all things to do with running a business. I love the music industry and making music and have great respect for Russ and his role in this arena. His father was obviously a great mentor for him and in-turn for all of us. Narration was great and well paced. A very enjoyable read.

A business book from a mentor not a researcher

There is a place for business books written by researchers who have studied success rather than living it. Many of these business books start well but usually lose momentum by the middle, as the main crux is repackaged and repeated ad nauseam. This book is the antithesis of this; simple, practical advice that can be listened to in sequence or in isolation.

The Book Dad Told Me Not To Write oscillates between the first and second person, and therefore feels very personal, giving you the feeling that you are sitting in a room with a mentor rather than attending a lecture. In fitting with this methodology, much of this book follows an anecdotal approach. Instead of stating academic studies, the listener is advised to "do the work" and filter the advice themselves (keep what works for you, disregard the rest). There would be a temptation for the author to filter the content to only use experiences that paint the author positively, but this is not the case here. Honest appraisals of his previous failings with diet, finance and personal attitude are refreshing and reinforce your trust in the author.

I listened to this audiobook over the space of two days, so I haven't started to implement the key takeaways yet. Still, to draw parallels to the authors approach, I can tell you with "anecdotal certainty" that Russ's formula for diet and exercise works. I have been following Russ's method with some form of cosmic kismet almost verbatim for four months before reading this book. I have lost over three stone (or 20% of my body weight). If the rest of the advice has a similar positive effect on my life, I would have paid many times over what I did.
