Summary

Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews, Nina is horrified.

They all live close by! They're excited to meet her! She'll have to Speak. To. Strangers. And as if that wasn't enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. It's time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell. It's going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

Returned

I was only in a few chapters and the narrator mispronounced one word to many, so I returned it. The book is definitely worth a read though.

Fun, but trying too hard.

I like Abbi Waxman's sense of humour particularly in her first book (the Garden of small Beginnings) but there wasn't as much of it in this book. The book seemed to be trying too hard to be current in its themes and it just didn't really work for me. The male characters were a bit flat, though Nina herself was great. I had high hopes for this book and it started really well, sadly I felt it fizzled out and became quite cliche in the second half. Enjoyable enough but not a favourite.

Rosie Project Vibes

🧡 If you’re a socially awkward, bookish millennial looking for a heartwarming, happy, carefree listen, this is it. It has the nods to nostalgia with references to 90s TV shows and films, lightweight content and dry humour. It was exactly what I needed to get me out of a listening rut. This will not blow your mind, but it should make it hum contentedly.

SOUNDBITE

🎧 No bells or whistles here, just an easy to pick up and put down listen. Narrator Jessica Preddy gives an energetic, bright performance, her voice not dissimilar to that of Kristin Chenoweth, who always makes me smile.

DNF @ 30 %

Just couldn't connect with central character and mind kept wandering off, so constantly lost the plot. Tried several times over years but never made it over a quarter of the way through!
