Summary

Penguin presents for the first time the complete, unabridged audio edition of Mary Norton's The Borrowers.

The Borrowers live in the secret places of quiet old houses: behind the mantelpiece, inside the harpsichord, under the kitchen clock. They own nothing, borrow everything and think that human beings were invented just to do the dirty work.

Arrietty's father, Pod, was an expert Borrower. He could scale curtains using a hatpin and bring back a doll's teacup without breaking it. Girls weren't supposed to go borrowing, but as Arrietty was an only child her father broke the rule - and then something happened which changed their lives.

She made friends with the human boy living in the house....

Just not the right narrator

We just couldn't bear to carry on listening to the flat delivery with strange intonation. So disappointing! We pressed pause and spent another credit on the same book read by another narrator.

“Let’s get borrowing”, Coco aged 8

I would give it 5 stars if it was only me voting. I would recommend it to anyone who has a big imagination. I loved it .”, Coco. (Aged 8, again)

“ The people I say that would enjoy this book would be someone who enjoys ‘fantasy’ istories. A great story to listen to on trips ( when we went to France)”, Xavi aged 10. 🤓.

Great story - poor performance

The story of the borrowers is brilliant, this audio is very dull. The children found it difficult to listen to and even more difficult to follow. I'm disappointed I used a credit on this.

The best children's book of my life

My father read this for me when I was small and throughout childhood. It was taken from a kiddies magazine called ' Treasure ' that they bought until it ended. The whole series of The Borrowers, drawings and imagination spent upon writing it is very special. I am 64 now and still love it.

This version I didn't want to end. I hope the others are available sometime. Magical charm and not appreciated enough. Wonderful thank you!

hello again ...

after 45 years, having read this gem of a book to my four and five year old sons, what a joy to become reacquainted and to remind the boys of all the stories we read together.

Childhood memories

I read this book as a child, and still love reading it today, listening to it on audio made such a difference, I don’t think it’s just for children, I think it’s for all ages, it brings back happy childhood memories.

Very enjoyable story, a must for miniature lovers.

I’m an adult reader and really enjoyed this story, as I love the world of miniature and the nod the crafts was nice too.

Fantastic!

A brilliant storyline, amazingly read by Christopher Eccleston. Would definitely recommend for young listeners. This was my bedtime story for a few weeks and I was very sad when the chapter ended each night.

Wonderfully told.

Christopher Eccleston's voice brings this heartwarming story to life making it an absolute joy whether you're a child or an adult. I looked forward to the bedtime story as much as my 9 year old son.
