About this listen

From the queen of white-knuckle suspense and searing family drama comes a harrowing glimpse into the real world behind the headlines. This is a novel of immense power and compassion - one that will move all who listen to it.

Tina is a young woman hiding from her grief on the streets of the Cross. On a cold night in the middle of winter, she breaks all her own rules when she agrees to go home with a customer. What she finds in his house will change her life forever.

Across the country Sarah and Doug are trapped in limbo, struggling to accept the loss that now governs their lives. Pete is the local policeman who feels like he is watching the slow death of his own family.

Everyday brings a fresh hell for each of them. Told from the alternating points of view of Tina, Sarah, Doug, and Pete, The Boy Under the Table is gritty, shocking, moving and, ultimately, filled with hope.

Yet again not disappointed Fantastic

My 3rd Nicole Trope book in a row, in 3 weeks. I have tried listening to similar but found the other stories really not as believable or as good as Nicole Trope books.

I am really pleased that her stories cover issues that are real life issues her characters within the stories are dealing with our modern societies far from pleasant aspects. She never over sensationalises the issues but she always makes you understand what and how people find themselves dealing with them. Her way of telling through her stories how it is normal people just as I or you could be that are having to deal with the situations is something I am constantly in awe of. This is secondary again however, to a real interest and believable main story line. I hope I can constantly find Nicole Trope stories to devour as for me they have a real place in modern contemporary literature and have reignited my interest in why books however you come to them through spoken word or reading, have an important place not only for myself but as a record of social history too.

Great book by Nicole Trope worth going down under

What made the experience of listening to The Boy Under the Table the most enjoyable?

The lack of traditional structure; however, at one point this did lead to a two hour chapter. I'm not sure how much of this was down to the audio set up.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Boy Under the Table?

The closing scenes were done well on an emotional level.

Which character – as performed by Susan Strafford – was your favourite?

Susan Strafford's accent added to the authentic tone, but there was no particular one character that stood out.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Due to the nature of the plot line it was difficult not to have an emotional reaction to this book and at sometimes it was hard to listen to.

Any additional comments?

Enjoyed the level of detail involved in Tina's character - it made you really feel for her.

Couldn’t wait for my commute to keep listening!

Couldn’t put this down - having just listened to one of Nicole’s other books the boy in the photo, which was excellent i decided to purchase this one. Loved the characters- so very well written although upsetting in parts, an excellent read. Loved the narrator too. Have only just discovered Nicole trope, so I will definitely be reading more of her books.
