Summary
Recovering on a remote Scottish island, his peace doesn’t last long. He is pulled in to a murder inquiry by the overstretched local police. A newcomer, popular with the islanders, has died in perplexing circumstances. The community's reactions are complicated and fragile.
It’s good to be back on the job. And when Simon returns to Lafferton, an arsonist is on the rampage and a woman whose daughter disappeared some years before is haunting the police station seeking closure. She will not let it rest, and Simon is called in to do a cold-case review.
At home, Simon is starting to get used to having a new brother-in-law - in the form of his Chief Constable Kieron Bright. His sister Cat has embarked on a new way of practising medicine, and his nephew Sam is trying to work out what to do with his life. And then their tricky father, Richard, turns up again like a bad penny.
In this gripping new Serrailler thriller, Simon's personal and professional lives intertwine in more complex and demanding ways than ever before.

A series that has run its course
Rather a dull end, I hope, to this series of novels. No more of the same, please. Cat’s got married and gone to the private sector! Poor Simon loses an arm, but is none the worse for it. Next time perhaps a leg? The story motors along with the familiar neurosis, twittering on long after there’s anyone left caring. Plots don’t really matter when characters run to fat and are getting ready to fall of their perches. A happy ending at all events, and a merciful release for listeners. Surely the end has come.

welcome back Simon
Another thoroughly enjoyable if occasionally harrowing episode in Simon Serralier's life. Well written, well narrated.
Hopefully there won't be such a large gap before the next book so that we can see how Simon Serralier's life with his bodily problems progresses.

The enjoyable series continues
I've followed this series over the years and am always glad when a new book comes out and I can hear what's happening to the characters that I feel I know well. As with other books the descriptions of the lives of the characters plays as much a part of the enjoyment, for me at least, as the detection of the crimes.
Steven Pacey is one of the very best narrators as he has such a facility for creating different voices.

Not as much depth
An engaging book, but lacks the depth and pace of her earlier books. Felt a bit disjointed at times, but still a good listen.

Soapy melodrama meta mystery fiction?
Susan Hill is undoubtedly a brilliant writer but I genuinely couldn’t decide whether this was a cosy piece of fan fiction with absolutely nothing going on, or a slick glimpse into the future of existential detective fiction - in which the detective does no detecting and the moral of the story is justice is a fallacy. Disappointed
Not the usual standard . Weak crime story compared to the other 7 books. May it was to ease back the character into the book. Having said this I will still eagerly await the next book in the series

Simon and family are back, but not with a bang
Good, but not the best. These books are all about family with murder thrown in.

Disappointing conclusion
I have loved every one of this series & was so delighted that Ms Hill had written another.
This one is disappointing, the ‘cases’ all lead nowhere & it seems a hurried tying up of loose ends, which somehow left me dis-satisfied.
No doubt, like me, you will buy it anyway, but don’t expect the usual intriguing characters with twists & plot turns. So much more could have been written about Simon’s new handicap, but it was almost brushed under the carpet. Such a missed opportunity for empathy.
I feel somewhat cheated!

Boring in places
I think there was too much " padding" too many irrelevant details. There are too many sub plots.
