About this listen

Introducing Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope.

The Crow Trap is the first book in Ann Cleeves’s Vera Stanhope series – which is now a major ITV detective drama starring Brenda Blethyn, Vera.

Everyone has something to hide . . .

Three very different women come together at an isolated cottage on the North Pennines to complete an environmental survey. Three women who each know the meaning of betrayal . . .

Rachael, the team leader, is still reeling after a double betrayal by her lover and boss. Anne, a botanist, sees the survey as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace, a strange, uncommunicative young woman, hiding plenty of her own secrets.

Rachael is the first to arrive at the cottage, but when she gets there she is shocked to discover an apparent suicide. But then another death occurs, and a fourth woman enters the picture – the unconventional Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope, who must piece together the truth from these women’s tangled lives . . .

Enjoy more of Vera Stanhope’s investigations with Telling Tales, Hidden Depths, and Silent Voices.

Good twist at the end

Really enjoyed it. The background of setting the story at the beginning did seem odd but I understood it as the story unfolded. Very good listen

A very good detective story

After watching the Vera TV show, seeing this audiobook made me want to listen to it. The narrator is very good and it's great to listen to on a long walk. I must recommend it.

Hearing Vera Stanhope speak

Took a long time to reach the ‘start’ where the police (Vera) came in. So long that I nearly gave up!

Interesting Story

Narrators voices seem to overlap the characters sometimes but generally well read and absorbing story line.

Great story, chapterjng wrong

Really enjoyed this after listening to the Shetland series too.
All the chapters didn’t match though which caused confusion at the beginning as thought I’d missed something.

Perfectly woven story with characters that develop and grow as the story progresses.

Bit slow to engage the reader but worth the wait as it is beautifully written to draw you into the story.

My first Vera

Having listened to all the Shetland books and loved them and having read the Two Rivers books I was looking forward to starting the Vera series having enjoyed the tv series.
I found the story a little slow but well written and engaging. The narrator’s voice was perfectly pleasant in descriptive passages but I’m afraid I did not enjoy her male characterisations which all sounded similar and “put on”. I will probably stick to reading the rest of the series.

Keeps you guessing

As with many good mysteries this one keeps its audience guessing as to who the perpetrator is.

Slow but good

This book is a little slow for my tastes, but it’s good nonetheless. There were a couple of pronunciations that don’t match with what I perceive to be correct, but they didnt ruin the story.
