About this listen

Would you like a more adventurous life?

Are you being held back by a lack of time or money? By fear, indecision, or a feeling of being selfish or an imposter?

Living adventurously is not about cycling around the world or rowing across an ocean. Living adventurously is about the attitude you choose each day. It instills an enthusiasm to resurrect the boldness and curiosity that many of us lose as adults.

Whether at work or home, taking the first step to begin a new venture is daunting. If you dream of a big adventure, begin with a microadventure.

This is the Doorstep Mile, the hardest part of every journey.

The Doorstep Mile will reveal why you want to change direction, what’s stopping you, and how to build an adventurous spirit into your busy daily life.

  • Dream big, but start small.
  • Don’t yearn for the adventure of a lifetime. Begin a lifetime of living adventurously.
  • What would your future self advise you to do?
  • What would you do if you could not fail?
  • Is your to-do list urgent or important?
  • You will never simultaneously have enough time, money and mojo.
  • There are opportunities for adventure in your daily five-to-nine.
  • The hardest challenge is getting out the front door and beginning: the Doorstep Mile.

Alastair Humphreys, a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, cycled around the world for four years but also schedules a monthly tree climb. He has crossed the Empty Quarter desert, rowed the Atlantic, walked a lap of the M25 and busked through Spain, despite being unable to play the violin.

The Doorstep Mile is Alastair Humphreys' 13th book.

"The gospel of short, perspective-shifting bursts of travel closer to home." (New York Times)

"A life-long adventurer." (Financial Times)

"Upend your boring routine...it doesn't take much." (Outside Magazine)

Useful, funny and easy listening.

I like Alistair’s work and have listened to a few other of his books. I’d recommend them all and this is no exception. He narrates it himself which adds to the enjoyment of this book. It’s useful in a self help type of way, but also easy listening with plenty of humour.

I totally get it!

Completely relatable and an honest truth about how not to be stuck in rut and caught up in the what if’s and fears that drive us to not take chances in achieving things we dream of doing!

Put in practice I scrimped and saved the money to spend two months in Norway after my boss very graciously let me take the time off (asking to do this took tremendous courage as I really like my job and didn’t want to let my team down or be flat out let go for insisting I must do it) I also had the fear of going because I might fall off a mountain or break bones and be stranded in the middle of nowhere... ahh man so many what ifs... but in reality I had my (first major) trip of lifetime and saw and did some incredible things and really it’s owed greatly in thanks to Alastair for being so honest about his reservations and feelings about traveling... real honest oh what the hell am I doing??? But I’m going to keep on going anyway!

Really enjoyed the book!

Adds Daily Value to life

I love this fellas writing. Each of his books have added more to my happy little world which is the aim of such a book I think. This book fits in nicely with the Microadventure one very nicely but also stands alone.
It's hard to pick which one of his books has ignited more adventure in my mind as they all trigger different dormant parts of my youthful ambitions in my middle aged mind.

Wisdom and inspiration blended with experience...

I liked this book for its inspiration and I hated it for underlining my propensity for procrastination. This is a good book which looks from every angle at how to make make adventure happen in one's life both big and small. It sometimes felt a little repetitive or obvious but again given my lifes lack of adventure and the need to learn from the error of my ways repetition and stating the obvious was perhaps necessary. **Overall RECOMMENDED

Encouragement to make the most of life

I loved listening to Alastair narrating his book ‘The Doorstep Mile’.

The book contains lots of positivity, encouragement, motivation, humour and realism...combined with practical steps to start your adventure (whatever that is and however big or small) .......and Alastair’s narration is an easy enjoyable listen.

I also have another of Alastair’s books ‘Microadventures’ which I bought about 4 years ago and it changed my outlook on how I spend my time and what adventures I can get involved in.

I am grateful to Alastair as my life is richer as a result - thank you Alastair.
