About this listen

An uplifting and inspiring World War II saga for fans of Nancy Revell and Annie Groves.

1942, Manchester.

World War II is in full swing, and Lily Mullins is determined to do her bit for the war effort. Her friends and sweetheart have all joined up, and Lily's sure there must be a role for her that goes further than knitting socks for the troops!

When she decides to volunteer for the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, Lily soon discovers that she has a talent as a wireless operator. Helped along the way by a special gang of girls, she finds strengths she didn't know she had and realises that the safety of the country might just be in her hands....

Meanwhile, Danny is determined to marry Lily, but his letters home become more and more distant. Will a long separation mean the end of their love story?

An uplifting and inspiring novel of women on the home front.

Very enjoyable story

This book kept me listening all day. It wasn't a new story line but the historical facts interwoven with a lovely fictional story and Shirley's descriptive phrases, along with an easy to listen to narration, makes me now want to listen to the next book.

Really Good!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it - it was well researched and the storyline was fab, but written very jerkily with not much depth or description at times (sorry).

But all in all I have spent a very relaxing and enjoyable couple of weeks listening to the story as I walked the dog, thank you; I’ll defo be buying the next one, Bobbie’s War - to which a little taster was given in Lily’s War. It was lovely to hear how this book was loosely based on the author’s parents, a fascinating touch.

Absolutely delightful story

My father was in Bomber Comand and my mother drove mortuary trucks during the war, sadly neither of them talked much about those days but I know it shaped them and us children. This has given me more insight to their lives in those days, and a whole lot more appreciation for how they raised us. It really is a delightful book, heartwarming sad and funny at the same time. On to Bobby's War straight away!! Thank you Shirley xx

Loved it from the start until the end

Wow what a story. I couldn’t put it down. The narration was excellent to. It’s great to know it was inspired from people that the author spoke to who had lived through the war. Thank you Shirley for such a great book.
