The End of the Affair, set in London during and just after World War II, is the story of a flourishing love affair between Maurice Bendrix and Sarah Miles. After a violent episode at Maurice's apartment, Sarah suddenly and without explanation breaks off the affair.
This very intimate story about what actually constitutes love is enhanced by Mr. Firth's narration, who said "this book struck me very, very particularly at the time when I read it and I thought my familiarity with it would give the journey a personal slant. Depressing story but beautifully performed
Colin Firth does a wonderful job here of telling the story of a man tortured by the loss of his love affair. There is much reference to Catholic guilt as Greene explores his own relationship, troubled as it was, with the Catholic faith.
It was a great listen, if not exactly uplifting.

grim but good
grim but good not good evening reading I found dead But Colin Firth makes it àll worthwhile. His interpretation makes it good night or day.!

Hypnotic
Moving and philosophical. Colin firth has the most wonderful voice that matched the character perfectly. Graham Greene is a master craftsmen.

Everything about this book was brilliant.
I first discovered Graham Greene in 1970, and that was when I last read this book. It’s very sad, but I loved it, and went on to watch the movies made of it.
Listening to Colin Firth’s narration made it all the more enjoyable. He brought the characters to life, and I could feel Morris’s pain, frustration, love and hate. I was sorry when it ended, and wished Colin Firth had narrated more Audible books.

Short, compelling and beautifully read

Yes
What about Colin Firth’s performance did you like?
Yes. What's not to like? His laid back, effortless performance was a pleasure on the ear.

Yes, one's emotions are pulled along with the narrator whilst at the same time you feel for the other character's involved. An exercise in empathy!

Exceptional narration
This is a tortuous story of love and faith. The workings of the mind in love are excruciatingly played out in this book. What is exceptional is Colin Firth’s narration however. A classic brought to life.
