Summary
Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.
Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing." Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

Great book by Ilan Pappe Essential reading for understanding the current situation.
I had my head in my hands listening to this. The cruelty and systematic nature of the cleansing during the Naqba and afterwards by the Israeli state is truly upsetting.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine
Bravo to Pappé, who has had the decency and courage to tell the world about the plight and massacre of the besieged and innocent Palestinians. He has done his research and details the evidence to support what he asserts. . Although it has been difficult to endure hearing about the absolute savagery meted out to the Palestinians, I am glad that I now know. Pappé is clear, that this is not about religion, but the destruction and eradication of the Palestinians.

The Root of the Conflict
The unfortunate struggle of the Palestinian people, who's rich history had been systematically wiped out, and their people cleansed, both by the killing of and also expulsion of them. The book tells of the events that happened in and around 1948, when European Zionist Jews came to settle on another people's (Palestinian Arab's) land, and how they managed to ethnically cleanse Palestine, village by village, town by town, person by person. It discusses the military plans, as well as actions taken and the influence of the terror groups (Haganah and Stern Gang) who were one of the main players in their ruthless cleansing of an innocent, people, acting as their military. Whether it was their use of flame throwers on some occasions against innocent women and children, poisoning of Palestinian water systems with typhoid on others, or just destruction of villages and housing and placing mines on ruins to prevent people coming back to collect the most basic and essential things, this book talks of the ruthlessness of these settlers when forming their new state, on top of a people who already lived there who had a rich history. I would highly recommend everyone to read/listen to this book, to get an understanding of what is the root cause of the issue in Palestine today.

We’ve been lied to
This book is. true eye opener. You’ll never view the “conflict” in the same way again.
This book mirrored my own experience in Israel as a youth. I volunteered on a kibbutz in the 80’s. In thanks for our free labour the Israelis took us on a road trip to the Lebanese, Syrian, and Jordanian borders and told us “Civilisation ends here”, the Arabs want to kill all Jews and ourselves for helping the Jews.
I subsequently met Arabs and found myself on the receiving end of amazing hospitality. I then went on to read the story of the Kibbutz I was volunteering on, and it’s story was like a chapter from this book. Kibbutz Tzora had formally been the Palestinian village of Dyar Aban. The villagers were expelled their houses blown up and the Palmach established the kibbutz on stolen property.
The ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians is ongoing, and is now turning into a Holocaust. God bless Ilan Pappe for bringing this knowledge to light, it gives me hope that this book was written by a Jew with people like him there is hope.

Wonderfully educational. Highly recommended
I heard of this book when it was recommended by Gabor Mate. I was struggling to understand the disconnect between zionism and humanitarianism, and Ilan Pappe’s scientific and objective approach was truly enlightening.
