Summary

The new must-have thriller from the best-selling author of Something in the Water.

The rules:

  1. Listen carefully.
  2. Do your research.
  3. Trust no one.
  4. Run for your life.

Harriet Reed is newly engaged to Edward Holbeck, the heir to an extremely powerful American family.

When Edward’s father hands her a tape of a book he’s been working on, she is desperate to listen. But as she presses play, it’s clear that this isn’t a novel. It’s a confession to murder.

Feeling isolated and confused, Harriet must work out if this is all part of a plan to test her loyalty. Or something far darker.

Because this might be a game to the Holbeck family—but games can still be deadly.

Ready or not, here they come....

Critic reviews

"Stylish, riveting, hugely atmospheric—I couldn’t put it down." (Lucy Foley)

"Engrossing and unputdownable." (Caroline Kepnes)

"Captivating doesn't cover it. Brilliant doesn't do it justice. This is a dazzling, gasp-inducing plunge-pool of a novel that grips your heart and mind and refuses to let go. Absolutely stunning." (BP Walter)

Great ending, long build up but it's needed

Another great book. Long build up, but it's necessary to lay the foundation of the story in my opinion!

Expected more given previous reviews

I had high hopes for this book but it was nothing special to be honest. I enjoyed most of it until the ‘twist’ which I thought was disappointing and a little unbelievable. Overall it was okay but not brilliant like I had hoped. Narrator for me was okay, although the ‘men’s’ voices didn’t much sound like men so I got confused a few times. Just okay for me.

4/5

This book started off slow I'm not going to lie but my the end I struggled to stop listening! Genuinely didn't see the plot twist coming, I still have a few questions. I don't understand why Robert didn't just go to the police - at least after Edward had killed multiple people. Either way, this was super interesting and I loved the way it's written. I also think Catherine Steadman did a great job at narrating, especially when it comes to the tape parts.

Chilling

Amazing story, well weaved through with sophisticated prose. One of the best I’ve listened to in 12 years of audiobooks

Captivating listen

Who would have thought a simple love story could have taken the twists and turns of this story fascinating and imaginatively written 💯👏

Story dragged out too much

I was hooked by the concept & the characters but just felt it went on for too long. Could have knocked 3 hours off the story quite easily.
Narrator has a nice voice but doesn't diverse enough between characters.

Read the book instead

Really good storyline but the barrator and production let the whole thing down a lot.
The narrator sounded bored for most of this with a very droney voice. Then there was the whole issue of every time there was a phone conversation the other ‘person’ went really quiet so you had to turn it up only to be deafened when the phone conversation ended. Lots to be learnt from the production and sound effects of The Archers or Audible productions.
Read the book instead!!!!

Entertaining

I did enjoy it although I’m tiring of the super rich elements in so many books, doesn’t add anything for me. It is obvious what’s happening but that didn’t spoil it. The only thing I would say spoiled it was that there wasn’t one single character that was likable, not even the main character.

Fast Paced Thriller

I really enjoyed this book. I'd have liked the last section last a bit longer, I was enjoying it so much but it was a good pace and well worth a listen
