Summary

Miss Silver joins a friend from Scotland Yard to investigate a suspicious suicide.

Frank Abbott’s vacations never last very long, and his trip to Field End is no exception. He has hardly enjoyed a moment of Jonathan Field’s hospitality before tragedy strikes. A niece ventures into old Jonathan’s study at night to ask him a question, and finds him stone cold with a revolver by his hand. An obvious suicide, it seems, but Inspector Abbott is not so sure.

He asks his friend Maud Silver, the brilliant detective, for assistance. She agrees it must be murder. But who is the killer? Assisting their investigation is the dead man’s strange habit of fingerprinting all who come to visit. But there are fingerprints all over the house, and solving this murder will require Miss Silver’s particularly delicate touch.

Another good Miss Silver listen

I have now purchased several of these 'cosy' crime stories and have read many of Wentworth's books. The wordy style is unmistakeable and you either love it or hate it. I do find the narrator just a bit deliberate sometimes but she is, I think, trying to reflect the tone of the books faithfully. Well worth a try if you like a classic crime story.

A particularly good Miss Silver story

I really enjoyed this Miss Silver story. I generally prefer Patricia Wentworth’s pre war books but this is a good later one and revisits several characters from earlier stories, mostly The Eternity Ring.

Miss Silver strikes again!

Wonderful story...marvellous narration. I'm a total addict of Patricia Wentworth's books, tales from a bygone era; exciting and compelling. Pure escapism.

Vintage crime.

A good distracting listen during lockdown. The performance perfectly matches the character of this post war story and the principal character of sleuth, Miss Silver.

The Only Dud Miss Silver

Love the Miss Silver mysteries, but this one is a rare dud and I couldn't get past chapter 5.
