About this listen

"Don't do it, Annika," he taunted. His eyes were no longer bright and charming, but dark and intense, yet they still twinkled. He was tempting, but was he harmful?

Aspiring rock star Annika Brisby thinks she knows where her life is going until she steps through a broken portal that leaves her stranded in a fae-filled realm of fairies, shapeshifter druids, psychic vampires, and other mythical beings. Unable to return until it's repaired, she's rescued by wood nymphs who believe her sudden arrival is no accident. After being taken in by a prominent family of elves, Annika finds herself struggling to resist the seductive spell of their youngest son, Talvi. Equal parts arrogant and alluring, the notorious heartbreaker seems like the perfect distraction for her homesickness. Her new friends warn her that she'll probably regret ever laying eyes on him, and what begins as a casual fling with a telepathic elf for a lover quickly burns too hot to handle. By the time Annika learns the consequences of their forbidden trysts, Talvi's already under her skin and dangerously close to her heart. But on the journey home she discovers that there's a mountain of secrets that he's not telling her, and Annika can't help wondering who's really in danger.

You'll enjoy this edgy, dark blend of New Adult Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance if you're a fan of Laurell K. Hamilton, Kresley Cole, Donna Grant, Charlaine Harris, Karen Marie Moning, Jeanine Frost, J.R. Ward, and Lynsay Sands.

Not my cup of tea

It took to long for the story to pick up some speed. Too slow going for my taste.

Epic style enjoyable!

Emigh Cannaday has created a fantastic alternate reality with magic and portals, faeries and elves, trolls and vampires, and much more. It has a lot of similarities to a simpler version of human life as we know it. But it is also strikingly unique.

This story has a little feeling of Alice falling through a hole, mixed with the Lord of Rings namely collecting friends and allies to go on an epic adventure, as well as a lot of the angst associated with the development of new romances. The characters are numerous, all vibrant and interesting. While the story centres on Annika and Talvi, the supporting characters create a wonderful tapestry surrounding the two main characters.

I like how the book ends. Without making this a spoiler, there is a HEA but also a hint of more to come. Cannot wait!!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Really good narrator but a very long & slow story.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book because I found it to be very slow. Nothing exciting happened in my opinion until we got closer to the end.
I also found that Annika the main character to be predicable which I must admit put me off. I kept thinking she will be different or stick to her guns but no it was to much to wish for. She fell in love the with Talvi the elf. I loved his brother Finn more. I felt he would have treated her better.
Talvi acts immature sometimes and he is meant to be many years old. He acted like a horny teenager not a century old elf!
Annika said that she has met his kind (a womenizer) before and knew how to deter them. Yet she fell for Talvi who is the type she doesn't go for!
I also found her to good to be true.

Which character – as performed by Nick Cracknell – was your favourite?

I loved all the characters he did. They all felt real to me and unique. I would defiantly listen to this narrator who I found to be really good.

Was The Flame and the Arrow worth the listening time?

I think it was worth listening to the narrator who I thought was very good! I just found the story to be very long and slow (not a lot of action since it is a fantasy). I believe some parts can be cut out of the book to shorten it. I think it didn't help that I didn't believe in Annika and Talvi's relationship.

Any additional comments?

Review.

This is a wonderful story beautifully read by Nick Cracknel. I read the book when it came out and loved it so much that I was excited to listen to the audio version. I was not disappointed it exceeded my expectations. The sound quality was clear and the narrator was very well chosen. During some of the longer passages I found his voice mesmeric. He was brilliant at skipping from one character voice to the next which must have been very difficult to do. He really touched my emotions. I think that while I listened to the story I felt I lived it, I became part of it. I adore Talvi and all his flaws I can't wait to continue the journey with the endearing elves.

Feisty romance

Any additional comments?

Annika is thrown into a world where fairies, elves, and unicorns roam the land. She doesn’t have the option of leaving and is soon thrust into the fight to regain control over the portals to the human world. Having Talvi, the handsome but annoying elf at her side throws an added complication but on this epic journey she will find out the truth about him and the others in her group.
After a slow start, the book became so addictive I couldn’t put it down. Annika is fierce, strong-willed, and doesn’t let people take advantage of her. Talvi is the lovable, flirtatious elf who charms her. The love aspect of this book isn’t the only thing going on. The story is about the epic journey they take and the fight for freedom as much as it is about love.
I read this book on both Kindle and audiobook and I must say the audiobook really did it justice.

Amazing!

This has totally changed my opinion of audio books. Not really being a fan in the past as I had tried a few, and felt them lacking and monotonous in narration, but I won the whole Annika Brisby collection and thought I'd give them a try as I adore the collection, which I have read numerous times. Well then, what with Emigh's amazing writing and Nick's mesmerising narration I've totally changed my opinion! Nick really brings each character to life ......... even the female roles.! They actually sounded just as I imagined they would in my mind, right down to the sexy tones of Talvi and Finn. I'm actually re-listening to them again after being too impatient the first time round to get listen to the next book instead of leaving my review! Can you tell I'm hooked? Fantastic guys highly recommend you give them a try ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
