Summary

The enchanted island of Corfu was home to Gerald Durrell and his family for five years before the Second World War. For the passionate young zoologist, Corfu was a natural paradise, teeming with strange birds and beasts that he could collect watch and care for. But life was not without its problems - Gerald’s family often objected to his animal-collecting activities, especially when the beasts wound up in the family’s villa or even worse - the fridge.

Great book, acceptable narration

Like the previous two books in the Corfu trilogy, The Garden of the Gods is utterly hilarious. Christopher Timothy does an acceptable job of narration, but is sadly lacklustre when compared to Nigel Davenport, whose characterisations brought the previous volume to life.

Spectacular

Engaging with a bit of humour. Great characters from an intelligent boys perspective, reminds me of other expat communities with similar characters.

Funny and warm hearted entertainment

I really enjoyed this last instalment for Gerald Durrell's Corfu trilogy. He was so lucky to experience such an idilic childhood and luckily, we can be transported back almost 100 years to enjoy it as well.

Great fun story almost ruined by poor narration!

super fun story with wonderful memories by 'Gerry dear
such a pity that it was almost completely spoilt by Christopher Timothy's dreadful narration. with certain words incorrectly pronounced.
Still however worth a listen!

Great Stories to Transport You To Another World

Really enjoyed listening to these stories, so beautifully observed and told by Gerry Durrell and narrated to perfection by Christopher Timothy. I lost count of the times I laughed out loud as they described the most comic real-life situations - thanks for transporting me to another time and the world of Corfu!

Loved it, wish it were The Black Book

J.D. brings those days to life as though it was there in full view, even the weather felt real.
Being a recent septegenarian I have read avidly since childhood in full black and white post sepia era up and into the new millennium.
A Durrell voice springs from the page and now since Audible realism springs eternal.

If you would like to read something ‘delightful’ this is the book.

One can come back to listening to this book, read in this way, time and again.

(It is certainly possible to be tired of London, but it can more surely be said that if one is tired of listening to this, ‘one is tired of life’..)

; )
