Summary

Deadly storms. An ancient curse. Will her sacrifice save them all?

For generations, deadly storms have ravaged Mina's homeland. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curse them with death and despair. To appease him, each year a maiden is thrown into the sea, in the hopes that one day the 'true bride' will be chosen and end the suffering.

Many believe Shim Cheong - Mina's brother's beloved - to be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is sacrificed, Mina's brother follows her, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong's stead.

Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina finds the Sea God, trapped in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man and a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits, Mina sets out to wake him and bring an end to the storms once and for all.

But she doesn't have much time: a human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking....

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is a magical feminist retelling of a classic Korean legend, perfect for fans of Uprooted and Miyazaki's Spirited Away.

Potentially one of the best books I’ve read

Five stars are not enough for this magnificent gem of a book! I’ve loved every second of reading it even if it wasn’t something I’d usually read. The characters are fantastic, the writing is stunning and the whole thing is just so detailed without being overwhelming. I loved it, I am speechless! 10/10 would recommend 💕

A story tale of life. death, love and belief.

This was a fantastic story tale, Oh creates beautiful landscapes through the eyes of the central character.
The plot is sometimes conspicuous but very enjoyable.
I loved the descriptions of each character and their ways in the voice of Minah.

I have tried

I have made 2 attempts to listen to the book and failed each time. The concept seems interesting but more than 2 hours in and I felt the plot wasn't progressing anywhere. I tried to keep my attention but at the end I ended up losing interest and never finished the book. I would give it a miss

Colourful and vivid story telling enjoyable for all ages

I really loved the writing and the story was well thought out and thoroughly enjoyable. The world feel lively and colourful and the characters are all likable. It truly feels like a fairytale and I can definitely see the Ghibli inspiration.

This is a wonderful story. A reimaging of the Korean tale of Shim Cheong, this book feels like a heartwarming fairytale filled with love, bravery, and sacrifice.
