About this listen

Everyone in 15-year-old Bella's life needs something from her. Her mum needs her to help around the house, her dad needs her to not make waves, her ex needs her to not be so much. The only person who never needed anything from her was her grandmother – and now she's dead.

There's only one thing that dulls the pressure: alcohol. Vodka, beer, peppermint schnapps – alcohol smooths the sharp edges of Bella's life. And what's the big deal? Everyone drinks. Besides, Bella can stop whenever she wants. But after she gets blackout drunk at a Thanksgiving party and wakes up in the hospital, it's time to face reality. And for Bella, reality means rehab.

Gorgeously written and deeply compassionate, Kathleen Glasgow's The Glass Girl is a candid exploration of the forces pushing young women toward addiction – and what it really takes to help them get better.

Critic reviews

'In true Kathleen Glasgow fashion, not only will this book absolutely wreck you in the best way possible, but it will open up conversations about something bigger.' (Cosmopolitan)
'Deeply moving in its portrayal of pain and the lengths people will go to in order to escape it. Stunning in every sense of the word.' (Josh Silver, author of HappyHead)

Thought Provoking

This was a wonderfully written story, extremely well read. A really powerful book about addiction in a young person. It is one of those books which will continue to play on my mind for a long time.... how many young people are struggling with an addiction around each of us? The main character is 15 years old and, whilst I am many years older, this book would appeal to anyone from that age up. Definitely a book for both young and old adults as well as teenagers.
