Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

If you love Bridgerton, you'll love Georgette Heyer!

The charming Sophia Stanton-Lacy is a force to be reckoned with.

When Sophy is sent to stay with her London relatives, she finds her cousins in quite the tangle.

Cecilia is besotted with an attractive but feather-brained poet, Hubert has fallen foul of a money-lender and the ruthlessly handsome Charles is engaged to a pedantic bluestocking who seems to bring out the worst in him....

Fortunately, Sophy has arrived just in time to sort them all out - but Charles is eager to rid his family of her meddlesome ways. Has the grand Sophy finally met her match?

Critic reviews

"A rollicking good read that will be of particular joy to Bridgerton viewers...the permanent glister of scandal [...] ties the whole thing together." (Independent)

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes. Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)

Great story but some key pronunciations need work

A few significant mispronunciations, especially Phaeton (she used something close to the USA version which does not sound right at all, it even has an extra syllable!), a pity as it occurs several times in a single chapter and jolted me every time. This seems to be a common issue with Audible and Georgette Heyer books - a English accent but USA words which are completely wrong.

Story, characters and reader excellent

Dislike the author’s antisemitism. Skip the chapter where Sophy goes to the moneylender! There is also a negative reference earlier but that probably does represent how they used to talk about people.

Disappointing narration of a delightful comedy

The Grand Sophy is a bubbling comedy and one of my favourites among Georgette Heyer's books. The heroine, Sophy, in particular, has a strong sense of fun. It's read competently by Louise Jameson, but I do miss Phyllida Nash's lightness of touch.

One of Heyer’s best

This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books, very nicely read by Louise Jameson. Full of sparkling dialogue and lots of humorous touches. It gets off to a slow start but once Sophy arrives the pace does not slacken to the end. A delight.

Wonderful story

Wonderful story, I first read this book when I was in my 20’s and have been a fan ever since.
Overall Louise Jameson did a good job with the narration but I blame the editor for the mispronunciation! Did no one give her any guidance on how to pronounce Recency carriage names, when did a Phaeton become a Phaerton!
I do think that Audible are very lax in there guidance to their narrator’s, surly this should have been picked up early on. It drove me crazy, but nothing would have stopped me getting to the end of The Grand Sophy!

Excellent

I now understand why this book is usually top of the list of Georgette Heyer's works. Sophy is intelligent, confident, mischievous, full of humour. She is a highly entertaining character. She isn't perfect, but that's part of the fun of it. The narrator was great as well, giving life to all the characters, though I could hardly differentiate much between the voices. The story went so awry, it was great that it wasn't predictable. My only minor gripe was that the lead guy needed anger management therapy lol. But it is mostly a great story and full of so many memorable characters who are caricatures of themselves, much like the characters of the great Jane Austen herself.

One of the few Georgette Heyer’s…

….that Penguin has re-recorded recently that is actually well narrated. This narrator could actually pronounce words correctly, understood the story and gave the characters’s suitable voices. This narrator has done justice to Heyer’s brilliance.

Excellent and Enjoyable

Excellent narration by Louise Jameson, her different voices were authentic and the narrative blended well with the voices. This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer novels
