This is one secret he’s keeping to himself. And who would believe him anyway?

Farin, the gravedigger’s son, lives in the medieval village of Heap. The 18-year-old is an outsider who is bullied and ostracized by the villagers. His father has succumbed to a life of drinking, and the young man has no option but to take over the job of gravedigger.

But Farin’s life takes a dramatic twist when the village witch dies. As he prepares her for burial, he finds an amulet hanging around her neck, and he can’t resist trying it on....

4hrs in, nothing happened

In the first four hours, the only thing that happens is that an old woman is strangled to death and the gravedigger's son takes a pendant from her corpse. That's it! She may be a witch or (more likely) everyone's a superstitious peasant. Impossible to tell.

The rest is composed of hours and hours AND HOURS of horrible people being horrible with each other for no other reason than that the author was incapable of creating compelling conflict so he resorted to the simple trick of making everyone have antisocial personality disorder. I was curious about the premise and wanted to know how this book ends but listening to it is so unpleasant as to be punishment. That initial curiosity is fading by the minute.

On top of everything, it's written in an inappropriate style, like it's a children's tale, which mixes awkwardly with the tons of sadism, adult themes, and general filth of the world. The desperate attempts to humor are generally unfunny and embarrassing to listen to.

The narrator has no fault in this and his work is great. Nice dry voice and wry manner.

Thoroughly Enjoying This Series

I wasn’t sure if this was going to be my sort of book but, I am so glad that I went for it. I am thoroughly enjoying listening to it and am going straight onto Audible to buy the next in the Series.
The Narrator is excellent and brings life to each and every character.
I would definitely recommend it to fantasy fans.

What a great surprise

For fantasy addicts, you have to put up with a lot of mediocre or average books while you wait for your favourite authors to release their next, or for new kids to arrive on the block. What a treasure these books were. A real delight! Strongly reminiscent of Robin Hobb, in my view. The characters and ground work takes awhile to bed in, but patience pays off.

I can't wait for Feuerbach's other books to be narrated in English!

Great

It's nice to listen to a fantasy novel who's writer has real voice . A great start to a series . Entertaining . Well paced , unlike to many novels that rush pass the start or take so long I find them great to get to sleep with . The narrator does a wonderful job . If you love or even like fantasy ; or just a good story ; this is a must get

I adjusted the speed significantly and it was fine

Adjusted speed more than usual immediately after hearing the first sentence. no probs after that. it would have been unlistenable otherwise. made me wonder if they slow done deliberately to increase the listening time. anyway. that aside. enjoyed it. might even buy into next books .

A revelation

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this - found it difficult to adjust to the tone in the context of a pseudo-medieval fantasy - tone and language definitely 2023! But as I got into it and began to laugh as well as be intrigued I thought this was brilliant- is it a spoof, is it serious- does it matter? Really entertaining with some interesting philosophical details thrown in. Only downside is, this book was free and now I’ll have to buy them … that’s how the demons get you …

Absolutely ADORED these books!

I thought these books were absolutely fantastic. Listened to all 4 back to back and there were so many moments when I uncontrollably laughed out loud. The author was brilliant and the narrator absolutely brought the books to life.

Interesting

This is an interesting and unusual medieval fantasy, featuring two unlikely heroes - one male and one female. They are two less than average, ‘un-beautiful’ and imperfect (but basically good) types that are hurled into extraordinary circumstances.

I am looking forward to seeing how their characters and the story develops in the next book!

…Makes a welcome change from the typical effort in this genre over the past couple decades - usually focused on a raging war and staring a child prodigy, teenage ‘wonderlad’ who behaves like a middle aged man and his feisty, supermodel beauty (or two… ) who always only serve as sidekick/s, in spite of their acid personalities.

An enjoyable beginning to a saga

Great narration and I enjoyed this style of writing with sarcasm and wit. It reminds me of the name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss
