Summary

C.S. Lewis's dazzling allegory about heaven and hell - and the chasm fixed between them - is one of his most brilliantly imaginative tales, as he takes issue with the ideas in William Blake's ‘The Marriage of Heaven and Hell'.In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon and embarks on an incredible voyage through Heaven and Hell. He meets a host of supernatural beings far removed from his expectations, from the disgruntled, ghostly inhabitants of Hell to the angels and souls who dwell on the plains of Heaven. This powerful, exquisitely written fantasy is one of C.S. Lewis's most enduring works of fiction and a profound meditation on good and evil.

Critic reviews

"There is attractive imagery and amusing satire… There are exciting speculations… Mr. Lewis rouses curiosity about life after death only to sharpen awareness of this world." ( The Guardian)

Christian Fantasy

I read this book 40 years ago and was really impressed with it. I don't think it will be everyone's cup of tea, but as a Christian book it reveals the essence of the Christian Faith i.e. It is not by our own good works we can enter the Kingdom of Heaven, there are things that we cling onto despite how they hold us back etc.
It is a fantasy book with Christian truths written into it.

the light shines

Whilst reading this book, I began to see more clearly that clinging to a narrative is against love which beckons us to grasp the light and have the life abundant. I'm glad I read it, and hope you will be too.

A clever way to describe heaven and hell

We have a choice as to whether we stay in hell or travel to heaven. why would we choose hell? CS Lewis explains.

One of the best books I have ever read

I love this book and really enjoyed having it read to me, it brought out different aspects of the narrative than when I read the words, adding richness and insight. You can't beat C.S. Lewis for deep yet accessible writing and I will be regularly revisiting this audio book in the future.

Not what I was expecting, but pleasantly surprising!

The story of this book, gives you a completely different perspective on what he’ll is. Likewise the perspective of what heaven is like is also surprising and inspiring.
This book is definitely worth ready, if you want to have your intellect challenged on traditional views of heaven and hell.

A fantastic rendering of a spiritual classic

What a marvellous reading for a change! someone who can read well! And what a book. I read it 20 years ago and great to hear it in just a few hours of a Saturday as I walked country paths and rested from the week. it had me in tears, laughing and praying. So many memorable moments in this great allegory of life beyond the grave. CS Lewis was a master of descriptive imagination, psychology and genuinely sought the deep things of God- God himself: a true Theologian.
