Summary

In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize.

Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women who, despite tremendous personal and professional obstacles, continued to devote their lives to scientific innovation and social change.

Playwright Lauren Gunderson was awarded a commission through the Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund, an initiative dedicated to developing innovative original plays driven by language and voice. As an Audible commissioned playwright, she received funding and creative support to develop The Half Life of Marie Curie.

The Half Life Of Marie Curie

Performances that take you to another place. Seeing as a play, watching the actors is one thing. This, as audio, is another journey, more powerful. Close your eyes and just listen. Become a part of their journey and 'live' it with them. Both actresses draw you in and spiritually you are there with them. Beautifully acted and written. You feel honoured to feel you are sharing their journey and their amazing friendship, their love for each other, these two amazing women. When I 'returned', face tear stained, my home was in darkness, because I had been truly 'away'. Thank you to all for my amazing journey with you, for allowing me the honour of sharing something which enriches me.

Brilliant!

Love the actors and the story. It allows us to think of Marie Curie as more than just the person who worked on Radioactivity.

Fabulous

Wonderfully absorbing drama given by two splendid actors. The story of an abiding friendship between two brilliant women who were often overlooked by a patriarchal culture. More like this please, Audible!

Pure Joy

This was a beautiful piece of writing! For an hour and a half I was totally captivated by these two amazing women. I was drawn into their friendship so much so I cried at the end. Isn't it always the case that the most powerful women have the best stories to tell, whether it is love, pain, fear terror or bias.
Thank you audible and Kate Mulgrew who was awesome!! And of course Francesca Faridany thank you for an hour and half of pure escapism x x x

Amazing!!

The actresses, the writing and the background sounds were all perfect. I was both thoroughly entertained and informed. I listened to it in one sitting because it was just so encapsulating. One minute I was laughing the next I was crying, the performance was so well done it really does pull at the heartstrings. The fact it was a non-fiction piece added to the joy and sadness.
Thank you for this work of art and I hope there will be more pieces from this team in the future.

Wonderful ... just wonderful

I hate to admit as a scientist I hadn’t heard of Herta Ayrton. But oh wow what a fabulous person she was. We all know something of Marie Curie. At least I hope we all do, but this drama brought such life to her friendship with another scientist.
Brilliantly imagined, acted and produced. I only heard it yesterday and already recommending it to people I know, scientist or not. Every woman can gain something from this story, entertainment, courage, determination ... and some good laughs. Be prepared to be outraged too. And if you’re not, why not?!
A must listen for every young woman especially, but us older female scientists have a lot to take from it too.
I can’t commend it enough.

Wonderful insight

Excellent story of two wonderful women of society, exploring some of what they were up against living at their time. Truly inspirational, a shame they are not household names the whole world could identify today. Makes you think without these women the world could be a very different place now.
