Very enjoyable. A little superficial.

Any book about Hitler has to be careful not to become a brief history of WW2 and for me there was not enough of an attempt to understand Hitler. An example would be the statement in the final chapter about how Germany would have been better off without Italy in the war, but what was it about Hitler which bound him to support and indulge Mussolini?
I would recommend this book. It is more accessible and an easier read than Ian Kershaw’s Hitler.
The performance of the reader is great but there are a couple of small gaps from poor production, but this did not distract from the book.

An In-depth Account of The Rise and Fall of Hitler

I enjoyed the voice of Paul McCann reading this account of the 1930s to the end of the Second World War in Europe. There was so much I hadn’t realised about how Hitler had risen to such power, and the manipulation of the people around him and the people of Germany. A piece of history that needs to be told again and again. The wholesale slaughter of the Jewish people due to one man building such hatred in the minds of a country’s population. A well researched piece of history that is relevant today and for the future.

Worth listening.

The first volume of this book is very based on Hitler and his political and personal views. This second volume is very much more focused on the sequence of the war rather than Hitler himself. A good informative listen though.

Narrator not great, story good

Narrator randomly inserted numerous pauses causing some confusion. At risk of being ‘scousist’ I’d say Mr McGann wasn’t an A star scholar of the English language. The content was detailed and informative so the overall experience was good.

An original take on events we think we know about

An original take on events we think we know about. Frank McDonagh's book in two volumes, takes a chronological approach. Detailed, with new information and new angles on events, it is very accessible without ever trivializing aspects. Paul McGann is such an appropriate choice of narrator hailing from Liverpool like the author. Moreover, his narration is excellent, adopting exactly the right, measured tone throughout. Utterly professional performance, very listenable. Thank you.

Superb, simple, powerful... dark

Powerful story told chronologically... narrated expertly by Paul McGann...the sense of impending doom for the innocent victims of a demented leadership ; and the conveying of how it would reap the whirlwind it had sowed is compelling. This is an admirable follow-up to the first half of this incredible dark story.
