Not sure!

Enjoyed the story my first time of 'listening' to H.P Lovecraft ( I have read them ) but I wasn't keen on the breaks between the chapters and the 're-reciting of the title each time I knew what I was listening to and didn't need it repeating and repeating and repeating and ........................ That being said I did enjoy the actual narration and looking forward to hearing other stories narrated by Jim Donaldson

It's Lovecraft. It needs more to be said.

As with Lovecraft this is brilliantly penned and crafted. A master of the craft of horror. A giant of his own and deservedly so. The production is very well done and the Narration is excellent. The atmosphere is perfect.

Highly entertaining.

Highly entertaining and masterfully read by Jim Donaldson. H.P. Lovecraft. Is a master of spine chilling literature. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and if you like creepy stories, listen to this one. The bonus is the history of the authors life at the end. In all, a 5 star performance.

A classic with comical sound effects

What did you like best about The Horror at Red Hook? What did you like least?

I'm not sure if I did like it. I can see how it would have been a shocking and frightening piece in its time. To me it was a bit too archaic and trying too hard to horrify and shock with too much horror all over the place the whole time.

Would you be willing to try another book from H. P. Lovecraft? Why or why not?

I probably will try. A short one. He is a great classic and I need to read him without the childishly comical background noises.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was a bit over the top with trying to be very-very dramatic, a bit as though he was reading to children. In the last chapter about HP Lovecraft and the horror genre he even tried to give a "voice " to quotes from the writer which was completely unnecessary. The sound effects were comical and pathetic.

Was The Horror at Red Hook worth the listening time?

Well... I'm glad it was only an hour long. If it had been a regular length audiobook I would have returned it after the first few chapters mainly because of the awful noises and sound effects.

Any additional comments?

If you like lots of demonic laughter, mystical incantations and curses in Latin, ghostly writings on walls appearing and disappearing, chanting in distorted voices, gruesome faces appearing in windows at every turn, ghostly organ music, lots and lots of frantic shrieks and cries and screams, and all this in a clearly biased tone of total xenophobia, then this one is for you.

A superbly functional tale that left me smiling.

I wholeheartedly enjoyed this comparatively shortened storyline...but was thoroughly joyful in the sheer quality of said beautiful nomenclature...well done HP Lovecraft!

Hmm... Not for the diversity sensitive

What did you like best about The Horror at Red Hook? What did you like least?

Nice creepy short story from HPL

If you’ve listened to books by H. P. Lovecraft before, how does this one compare?

I prefer the Cthulu myths ones

Did Jim Donaldson do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

He's got a good voice but it's a little soporific. I liked the background sound effects.

Any additional comments?

It's a touch racist by 21st century standards!

A Must for horror and takes of the unknown fans.

Can't believe that I've never come across this author before as Poe, Stephen King and Clive Barker are authors whose works U love to read. Maybe I have come across Minecraft but not realised in all of the Pan Horrors U read in my youth. Have now purchased the collection.

Loved it!

The gravely voice of the narrator really added to reading and the occasional creepy background sounds really added to the atmosphere.

Not bad for 50p...

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

A die-hard Lovecraft fan who appreciates the dramatics of sound effects accompanying a story.

What was most disappointing about H. P. Lovecraft’s story?

The prose was hard to follow in places - I found myself listening to several parts again just to keep up with the story.

How could the performance have been better?

Though the story was read well, the sound effects in the background were distracting and amateurish.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The end section of the audio book gave some insight into Lovecraft's life and his first steps into becoming an author, which was interesting and worth listening to.
