Summary

An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place - and realizing that family could be yours.

He expected nothing. But they gave him everything....

Linus Baker leads a quiet life. At 40, he has a tiny house with a devious cat and his beloved records for company. And at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, he’s spent many dull years monitoring their orphanages.

Then one day, Linus is summoned by Extremely Upper Management and given a highly classified assignment. He must travel to an orphanage where six dangerous children reside, including the Antichrist. There, Linus must somehow determine if they could bring on the end of days. But their guardian, charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, will do anything to protect his wards. As Arthur and Linus grow ever closer, Linus must choose between duty and his dreams.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune is an uplifting, heart-warming fantasy tale that’s become a New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post best seller.

makes you care and not overwhelmed

This book was really nice! The main character is an iconic tired middleaged man that just wants happiness for everyone. every side character gets their moment and you start to care for every single one. Not much action really happens but you are just there for the journey. The conversations about prejudice are SO GOOD and really makes you think.
The narrator works well, some minor voices I would have changed but he does what he is supposed to better then some other narrators

Unexpectedly captivating.
The storyline is somewhat predictable and simple, but still captivating and truly enjoyable.

Couldn’t stop listening

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this as the first two or so chapters took me awhile to get into. I also wasn’t sure if I’d like the narrator reading but I was so wrong. So so wrong.

This book is absolutely brilliant. Once I got into my stride I couldn’t put it down. I listened to about five hours of the audio book between two days (on my commute, while making dinner, before bed, etc). I was hooked.

It’s a wonderful and hopeful book about growth, prejudice, unconscious bias, and how there’s room for all of us to grow. It’s not judgemental and those things aren’t overwhelming if that’s not your thing but for me it added so much meaning to wonderfully magical story about finding yourself and finding family in whatever size and shape it comes.

The voices are brilliant. The pace is wonderful. And it’s one I’ll be returning to again and again.

Intended for a younger audience

Felt childish a times but gets better as you continue. The reader helps with the creative voices used for different characters.

A story that left me with the warmest glow

I could go on about this being LBGT+ or how it is relatable to acceptance of other people/cultures etc.
I’m not going to, because the story is brilliant, the narration is brilliant & I can’t stop gushing about how wonderful it is.

The book that got me back into books

I doubt I'll be able to add anything other more astute reviewers haven't picked up. I scheduled my weekend around doing tasks so I could continue listening. I smiled most of the time, pausing sometimes to tear up. Truly, a delight.

A fantastic story

The story was so lovely, original and compelling but also fairly gentle. The narration, however, was rather lacking. I don't think it completely ruined it, but there were many moments when the inflection of sentences made no sense, and it felt a bit jumpy/gappy in places.

Just enchanting

I love this imaginative, funny beautiful book. The characters are real and heartfelt and the story so satisfying. The narrator is really wonderful and makes the book even better. Truly magical. Thank you for writing this book. Any chance of more books about the home?
