About this listen

A classic collection of stories featuring some of the funniest episodes in the life of Bertie Wooster, gentleman, and Jeeves, his gentleman's gentleman - in which Bertie's terrifying Aunt Agatha stalks the pages, seeking whom she may devour, while Bertie's friend Bingo Little falls in love with seven different girls in succession (including the bestselling romantic novelist Rosie M. Banks). And Bertie, with Jeeves's help, hopes to evade the clutches of the terrifying Honoria Glossop... At its heart is one of Wodehouse's most delicious stories, 'The Great Sermon Handicap.'©2014 P.G. Wodehouse (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Classics Heartfelt Funny Witty

Classic Wodehouse

I was introduced to PG Wohehouse in my early 20s when a University friend recommended him - and loved it. my Dad (I discovered) had several of his books (including a mint condition 1st edition of 'Joy in the Morning' which I didnt appreciate, so it's now much read, but not mint condition).
the Inimitable Jeeves is a great introduction to this set of characters. Great to listen to on long journeys now I've discovered it on Audio. Many a time I've had a quiet chortle as I've twiddled a thoughtful steering wheel ...

Top Drawer what?

Chapter timings a bit off but otherwise top drawer. a great performance and easy listen. I play at 1.25 speed so it feels more conversational.

Almost perfect

Writing: flawless. Narration: flawless. Sound quality /editing: errr, bit rummy, what? Sounds like it was recorded through a bowl of soup. Rather gave me the pip. I've knocked a twinkle off the full score just for that, and do so with a heavy heart. They should have put Jeeves on the case. I'm sure he could have pulled all the right strings and made the best of it.

Great stories and narrator, abysmal audio quality

The Jeeves and Wooster stories are always fun, and Jonathan Cecil reads them very well usually. This recording however is very patchy. There are odd pauses in the narration which I assume is bad editing and the audio quality is not of a good standard. There are numerous times when the volume fluctuates and also numerous times when the audio gets very muffled. I have looked into the possibility of returning this audiobook to replace it with a version with a different narrator, but the only one I could tolerate was the Martin Jarvis version, but that version splits this book into two separate volumes so having it would use up two credits as opposed to the one credit this volume cost, and also if I'm going to collect the series I would like the same narrator throughout.

Utterly fabulous

Inspired choice of a narrator - brings the stories to live, and as always, utterly hilarious. Well worth the purchase

Pure escapist joy

I would think most people know about Jeeves and Wooster, lots of TV programs and stuff. But go back and discover the actual texts. They are exuberant, witty and joyful. And Jonathan Cecil as narrator is an inspired choice. I have tried the Martin Jarvis reading of the same book, mainly, I suppose, because he's a more famous name but it wasn't a patch on this version. Jonathan Cecil captures the gormless, well-intentioned naivety of Bertie Wooster and the obsequious yet superior sang-froid of Jeeves perfectly. Okay, he struggles a little bit with consistent accents when Americans or country policemen come into the books, but who cares. For a few hours of delightful, escapist fantasy go for any of the Jeeves and Wooster books - especially those read by Jonnathan Cecil.

Bit muffled, wot?

Absolutely first rate, though there are a couple if passages where our narrator appears to be talking from somewhere like a tunnel, wot?

Jonathan Cecil Reigns Supreme

I came to this after reading most all of the full Blandings novels. As this was my first Jeeves outing I felt well looked after with Jonathan Cecil as the performer of this audio-book,. For me this book felt a bit fragmentary, perhaps because I was thrilled with the through-writing of the Blandings novels. That said I am still committed to listening to the very many other Jeeves audio-books that I have added to my Audible library. To be frank, I turn Wodehouse novels as refreshers amidst other and more chunky listens and murder strewn plots. You know that with Wodehouse there will be sunlight and laughter and no real malice anywhere. Here as in other Wodehouse offerings as soon as you start to listen, the skies clear, the warmth wraps round you and you just enjoy the joyous ride.
