About this listen
In the earliest centuries of faith, Christians in the deserts of Palestine and Africa sought a short prayer that could be easily repeated, in order to acquire the habit of "prayer without ceasing." The result was the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." This jewel of Eastern Christianity aims at enabling a person to be in God's presence, rather than to focus on feelings or thoughts about God. The first section of The Jesus Prayer offers a concise overview of the history, theology, and spirituality of Orthodoxy, so that the prayer can be understood in its native context. Following that is a conversational question-and-answer format that takes the listener through practical steps for adopting this profound practice in everyday life.

beautiful book will listen over again
A real gem! the reader is the author: humble and deeply spiritual. Deep yet easy to follow; concise yet full of insights, guidance and encouragement. Sprinkled with lots of stories and tips from the saints, as well as contemporary advice for busy lay people. I'm delighted and encouraged by this purchase! Not dumbed down, not overly academic and refreshingly waffle free!

Beware: extreme bias towards Orthodox Church
As an Anglican I sadly found this book to be prejudiced towards the Western Church and somewhat depressing. She is incorrect to state that there is no repentance in Western Christianity. Repentance is fundamental in Western Christianity and we say ' Almighty God our heavenly Father; we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed etc, We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ who died for us forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.
And during Communion the priest says "Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of His great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto Him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness;
and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
