About this listen
Welcome to the Orthodox Church - its history, theology, worship, spirituality, and daily life. This friendly guide provides a comprehensive introduction to Orthodoxy, but with a twist: listeners learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathews-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to "venerate" an icon, the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It's the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even listeners who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-listen-to and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East.

Excellent introduction
This is not only an excellent introduction to Orthodox Christianity, but also a treatise and handbook for more experienced Orthodox worshippers. The author is scholarly and erudite, supporting her statements with quotations and biblical narratives but she also has the gift of bringing the Eastern Church alive for the lay person, Catechumen or totally unversed, with warmth, charm and humanity. She has made it accessible. It is packed with quotafions, history and stories of today. I love the idea of inventing an imaginary church and congregation so as to convey Orthodox practices more comprehensively. I would unreservedly recommend this book which was truly uplifting.
