Summary

Britain is under New Management. The disbanding of the Laundry - the British espionage agency that deals with supernatural threats - has culminated in the unthinkable: an elder god in residence in 10 Downing Street.

But in true 'the enemy of my enemy' fashion, Mhari Murphy finds herself working with His Excellency Nylarlathotep on foreign policy - there are worse things, it seems, than an elder god in power, and they lie in deepest, darkest America.

A thousand-mile-wide storm system has blanketed the Midwest, and the president is nowhere to be found. Mhari must lead a task force of disgraced Laundry personnel into the storm front to discover the truth. But working for an elder god is never easy, and as the stakes rise, Mhari will soon question exactly where her loyalties really lie.

Good story utterly utterly ruined by the performan

I have listened to or read all of the Laundry file novels. narrator ruined this one
Real talent required to make all the male characters sound like petulant 12 year olds - not!!

I have a high tolerance but I have had to stop listening to calm down.....

Awful change of narrator

Picking an American narrator who can't do a single convincing British accent - let alone multiple ones - was a terrible choice. So was giving long-established characters totally new (and VERY badly done) regional accents. So was not telling the new narrator how to pronounce the names of long established characters (Muh-haari?! Really?!!).

I'm really struggling to keep listening without having to gnaw off both my arms as a survival tactic which really should not be the case.

Very lazy, very disappointing.

Never let this woman narrate another Laundry Novel

I have enjoyed listening to books for many years and until today have never returned one. This book is the first I have been so thoroughly dismayed by that I have asked for my money back.
The Laundry Novels are excellent and by itself this one probably is too but it is absolutely ruined by the appalling narration. I couldn’t finish the book so I will have to hope the publishers and Charles Stross listen to the comments in the review section and re-record this book soon. It takes a real lack of talent to narrate a book without being able to pronounce the name of the lead character and I can’t decide if the accents are down to a complete lack of ability or whether the reader was actually trying to alienate or insult the listeners.
If you’ve not listened to any of the Laundry books then please do because they are well written and enjoyable but please don’t waste your time and money on this offering.

Mhari Murphy, the h is meant to be silent

The story is brilliant. It's a shame that neither Jack Hawkins or Caroline Guthrie were approached.
The constant pronunciation of Mhari as Ma-ha-ri is grating. Also Bob and Brains don't sound right.
Did we get the American edition by mistake?

Experience does not improve on a second listen. Hope the publisher can afford to redub. Not sure whether to hold on or spend the credit on something more palatable.

Good novel spoiled by the narrator.

You guessed it, my review has the same negative points to make as the others.

Terrible narrator, regional accents are terrible, mispronounced names etc.

Completely ruined the story for me. I also noticed the gaps in chapter 4.

Volume control was also an issue, the narrator was either shouting or talking very softly. Potentially painful when you're listening through ear phones.

Bring back Jack Hawkins!!!!

Was gutted when I realized that the book wasn't going to be narrated by Jack Hawkins as most of the previous books have been. Am going to have to return this one and buy the book.....

Appalling narrator, actually puts you off

The story is good but the narrator is absolutely appalling and actually puts you off listening to the book for more than a few minutes at a time. Also the pronunciation of the lead characters name is dreadful, you don't pronounce the 'h' in Mhairi. I find it hard to believe that the author heard and approved the narration. The voice characterisation's of the players in the story sound like broad stroke caricatures rather than well considered portrayals and the narrator is awful at doing british accents.

Failure to pronounce the protagonist’s name correctly, shame!

Love this series of books, it’s a real shame that this narrator came up with the most inappropriate/phoneyest collection canned English accents for characters we know and love. Why could she not at least have listened to some of the previous books, a waste of a wonderful opportunity for us to have loved/admired her work.

Great Story Shocking Narrator

I was waiting for this to come out and wasn't disappointed. It's a great story,

The big downside is the narration which is worse that shocking. I still don't know the accent she was trying to do for Brains.

The Accents of all the main characters aren't consistent with the previous narrators either.

The story still carries through though, just don't let Laurence Bond loose on something that contains non-US accents. She can't do them.

Based on partial listen

It's no use. Just occasionally there are narrators that so wind me up that I have to return the book rather than listen all the way through. This is one. It's the joint worst narration I've heard - and I've heard a lot. The worst crime of all, as mentioned by other reviewers, is that the reader hasn't even bothered to find out how to pronounce the main protagonists name. None of the characters sound anything like they have before, accents are over the top and way out. I'm going to see if I can get text to speech on kindle instead as I'd rather have a robot voice than this. Just awful, which is sad for me as I was counting the days to the release.
