Summary

A mad surrealist's art threatens to rip open the fabric of reality, in this twisted tale of eldritch horror and conspiracy, from the wildly popular world of Arkham Horror.

Aspiring painter Alden Oakes is invited to join a mysterious art commune in Arkham: the New Colony. When celebrated Spanish surrealist Juan Hugo Balthazarr visits the colony, Alden and the other artists quickly fall under his charismatic spell. Balthazarr throws a string of decadent parties for Arkham's social elite, conjuring arcane illusions which blur the boundaries between nightmare and reality. Only slowly does Alden come to suspect that Balthazarr's mock rituals are intended to break through those walls and free what lies beyond. Alden must act, but it might already be too late to save himself, let alone Arkham.

Fun pulpy mystery

This was a very entertaining story. A good eerie atmosphere was held -up untill the end, even though we are never spared
cool and memorable encounters with the supernatural either. Its a hard balance, for this kind of story not to be too over the top with the monsters or not to drag with foreshadowing but his one gets it. There are just enough left in the dark of the underlying conspiracy even after the ending for me to stil ponder about it. Arkham is really well described, it has that gothic run-down "gotham-esque" grimy noir wibes, which are more in common with the board-game brand then with Lovecraft's original vision of the place, The same is true with the way the supernatural is shown in this book, people won't allways get gibbering mad each time they see something that hints of the paranormal, they can react, they can fight (with the expectable amount of success) but there is just enough sanity shattering for cosmic horror as well.

So if you are into the Arkham Horror Board games or you just one a supernatural mystery with a series of murders you should check this one out.
