Summary
A twisted killer targeting psychologists has left a grisly trail across Europe. Dr Tony Hill, expert at mapping the minds of murderers, is reluctant to get involved. But then the next victim is much closer to home.... Meanwhile his former partner, DCI Carol Jordan, is working undercover in Berlin on a dangerous operation to trap a millionaire trafficker. When the game turns nasty, Tony is the only person she can call on for help.

A best seller.
Suspend your disbelief and settle in for the ride.
Preposterous and reckless but great fun. At times you begin to wonder as all the crime thriller boxes get ticked along the way with an extra one thrown in towards the end where I laughed out loud. For the record, doorbells don't peel, nor telephones and nor do church bells. They ring.

Good story, well written
Really enjoyed this story although it could've done without the whole love interest thing. The narrator seemed to struggle a little though

faded away
this started well and built suspense and potential; it failed to maintain this and fell away to become increasingly weak and unbelievable.

Gripping!
Now then listening to this narrator on other Tony & Carol books, I don't know where to start really, I kind of feel sorry for him because he does have a pleasant voice when he's explaining scenes etc., it's accents that are questionable, in this episode his German sounded Yorkshire, I actually as I've reiterated before merely concentrated on the story.
Now, the story was gripping, it held me intently to the point where I had the vision of the scene in my head, it was the narrative of the evil man can do to man when there are no repercussions.
I actually felt sorry for culprit, I wanted Tony to save him, mmmn, maybe I'm getting too involved in these stories.
Val Mcdermid, has an astonishing mind to be able to think these scenarios up, I am in AWE!

Edge of the seat action, Start to finish
Although the ending was a little anti-climatic, I found my self lost in the story and the characters. I found myself both in love with and hating the villains, adore the reader and his range of voices, bringing the characters to life. The story, both sad and exciting, never wanting it to end.

Rules are there for a reason
At some point during the first two books, you should have thought they'd learned to adhere to police regulation, as everything goes tits up when they don't. This book could be used as a "how not to" at the police academy.
Combined with the (again) obvious, teaspooned pop psychology, it's just an irritating read.
