Summary
Imagine being alone in the world, one of only a handful to survive a global pandemic. Not only do you struggle to find food, water, and shelter but you also deal with the sadness and losing everyone you know and everything you have.
Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living that nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. His classmates and teachers are dead, rotting in a dormitory-turned-morgue steps from his room. The nights are getting colder, and his food has run out. The last message from his father is to get away from the city and to meet at his grandparents' town in remote New Hampshire. Knowing the impending New England winter could be the final nail in his coffin, Greg packs what little food he can find and sets off on his 100-mile walk north with the unwavering belief that his family is alive and will join him.
As the fast-moving and deadly disease strips away family and friends, Greg's father, John, is trapped in South Carolina. Roadblocks, a panic-stricken population, and winter make it impossible for him to get to his son. John and his three brothers appear to be immune, but they are scattered across a locked-down United States, forced to wait for the end of humanity before travelling to the mountains of New Hampshire.
Spring arrives, and the Dixons make their way north to find young Greg. They meet others along the way, slowly forming the last tribe of humanity from the few people still alive in the Northeast.

No zombies
Great performance, the story is a bit predictable in places but overall very well written. it's good to read a post apocalyptic book without a zombie in sight.

highly thought provoking
not much drama but a fascinating exploration of the mechanics of rebuilding a life after a global catastrophe, both practically and socially.

Thought Provoking about society.
Idealistic story of survival. Hits all the difficulties and glosses over some of the realities. Overall enjoyable. Listened to the end.

Sugar coated apocalypse
Any additional comments?
Firstly I need to say that I did enjoy this book, however as the story progressed I became more and more frustrated with the continued amazing good luck that the group benefited from.
Seriously, It was just way too easy... a doctor, a vet, a pilot, a young genius plus a lovely compliment of kids and my god, what a lovely group of good-standing US citizens they all were. *I feel like puking!*
I just think the story would have been so much better if their fight was just a little harder, more bad guys, a group that wasn't so lovely, more rows, people fighting over food - anything really to make it just a little bit tougher.
Saying all that would I recommend? Yes, as long as what you are looking for is a virus story which really focuses on the American dream with a splattering of moonbows and unicorns!

Interesting but struggled
The storey had interesting ideas but I was frustrated with the pace of it. Unfortunately the storey described too much and was too repetative. I didn't engage with the characters either. Overall it was ok, but I struggled to finish it.

You must listen/read this book!
This has to be in my best book category!
Wasn't sure to start but I was hooked from the start! As the story and the characters develops you are expecting the usual from an End of World book but it so different!
Not what I expected what made it so good!
Amazing Book!

Great charactors
I really enjoyed this book, it's an 'end of our world' story, but unlike so many others in this genre, it doesn't scare you with zombies or marauding killers. It's actually a rather wonderful story of people coming together against terrible odds and learning to survive together. There are holes in the story I struggled with a couple of times - finding cows weeks/months after being abandoned and with a bit of TLC started to produce milk again! hmmm. The narrator was great with only one criticism, two characters called Craig and Greg, he pronounced them Greg and Kreg and I found that really annoying! I know - I'm being anal! I do recommend it overall as it was an easy, gentle listen and passed my time commuting quite happily.

Enthralling and real!
Being a newcomer to Audible, I've found myself buying titles for the sake of listening and hoping for the best. This was one of my 'apocalyptic' choices, and it didn't turn out the way I'd expected.
There is a 'feel-good' notion about the books and I pray that there is a follow-up on its way soon!
The characters are deep, and you find yourself there, within the storyline yourself. There are a multitude of characters who you enjoy hearing from, and, when they go missing for a bit in the story, you find yourself wondering "what are they up to now".
Well worth it, and should be bought.

A book with hope at its core.
If you are looking for zombies, this is not the book for you. This is a book that details survivors of a deadly virus. Yes, it's been done before. This book has the edge as it is a book of hope for a future while most of this type of book is bleak and imagines the worst. No violence. I really enjoyed the book and it's characters.
