About this listen
Imagine being alone in the world, one of only a handful to survive a global pandemic. Not only do you struggle to find food, water, and shelter but you also deal with the sadness and losing everyone you know and everything you have.
Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living that nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. His classmates and teachers are dead, rotting in a dormitory-turned-morgue steps from his room. The nights are getting colder, and his food has run out. The last message from his father is to get away from the city and to meet at his grandparents' town in remote New Hampshire. Knowing the impending New England winter could be the final nail in his coffin, Greg packs what little food he can find and sets off on his 100-mile walk north with the unwavering belief that his family is alive and will join him.
As the fast-moving and deadly disease strips away family and friends, Greg's father, John, is trapped in South Carolina. Roadblocks, a panic-stricken population, and winter make it impossible for him to get to his son. John and his three brothers appear to be immune, but they are scattered across a locked-down United States, forced to wait for the end of humanity before travelling to the mountains of New Hampshire.
Spring arrives, and the Dixons make their way north to find young Greg. They meet others along the way, slowly forming the last tribe of humanity from the few people still alive in the Northeast.

'Fisher price ' dystopian fiction
not quite gritty enough for my liking. Not much originality here but fairly engaging characters to a point

One of the Best
All I will say is that if I didn't have to sleep I would have listened to this book in one sitting - excellent novel with exceptional narration.
I am partial the the occasional post apocalyptic story - many of which are on the gory side, but this book captivates the reader without the use of violence or gore, therefore could be deemed suitable for younger adults as well as old fogies who refuse to grow up!

Engrossing, optimistic tale beautifully told
Positively optimistic tale of the end of the world which is engrossing and well told. Perhaps the story skips over some obvious issues - such as why no-one thinks to use long wave radio to contact other survivors instead of driving around and using signal fires - but the characters are well drawn and the narration top notch. It's sometimes a little too relentlessly positive - the one or two 'bad' characters are quite one dimensional and obviously evil so present no real dilemma in whether they should be accepted into the 'tribe' and each problem solved itself rather too neatly. I would have preferred some more tension instead of continual high fives and mutual admiration. However as a holiday read for long bus rides or flights this won't disappoint.

So refreshing!
It was such a treat to read something that does not have the remainder of humanity turn into evil , totally self serving maniacs!. Well crafted beautifully read.

Nice story
I did enjoy this book but at times I felt the story was abit weak, things ran abit to smoothly and idealistic. Overall well worth a listen but could of had abit more peril & struggle

on the edge of my seat for all the wrong reasons!
Maybe ive heard too many apocolyptic stories...maybe im just a die hard King fan and have the echoes of numerous re reads of 'The Stand' in my head but i waited and waited for something to happen! Nothing...no zombies, rabid folk or even any psychopaths..nothing but niceness all the way...:( having said that i was reduced to tears on more than one occasion...a good narrator and generally a great story but just too nice!

This should have started with once upon a time
This should have started with once upon a time and ended with ..happily ever after. It was a 'nice' story but that's where the compliment ends. One in a million chance of surviving and group of 10 adults have a doctor, vet, child genius who can do EVERYTHING as well as a famous football star. As well as a couple of self styled Michelin star rated chefs! Did I mention one was a commercial pilot who flies them out to paradise where there are no people and no looting?? They came up against a couple of unsavoury survivors that I thought would definitely pop up and cause mayhem.... but no they exited stage left never to be heard of again. God forbid the survivors were the average under educated working class people that the world is made up of - how would they have managed!! Sometimes the cooking details were so exacting that I thought I was listening to a cooking show. Too much conversation - sounded like a screen play. If you don't want an exciting book but to be lulled to sleep by the most improbable storyline and loveliness that your mind could conjure in an apocalyptic setting then read on
