Summary

We live in a close-knit community. Thirty houses surrounding a square of garden that is perfect for our kids. We congregate here on major holidays, each family bringing a plate and sharing food and conversation. It’s in the garden that I first met her. The woman who would worm her way into my family and piece by piece tear it apart....

I should have known something was wrong from the very beginning. She seemed perfect in so many ways: She floated through the baby shower, a warm smile on her face, chatting to strangers with ease. At first, I thought it was sweet that she offered to help me, that she made an effort to get to know us, that she brought over games and knew Luna’s favorite foods.... I had no idea that I couldn’t trust another mother....

I should have known that someone would eventually discover the secret in my marriage. Why I never believe a word my husband says - and why he shouldn’t believe me. But how could a woman I only just met be the one to find it out?

If I’d known, I’d have called the police sooner.

And maybe I’d have prevented that dreadful scene. Every neighbor peering through their curtains as the sirens wailed in our street.

I could have protected my family.

I could have stopped what happened next....

Interesting but took a while

I listen to so many books with a protagonist saying how awful they are. Building a sense of interest. It wasn’t until the lady third of the book that you get to know what they did. Turns out most of the characters have done similar if not worse. Book good and held my interest. Nicely narrated

Wow!

Slightly irritating at the start with over emphasis on the fact there are secrets but well worth sticking with. Just wow!

Great twists

At first I thought where is this book going, quite a big build up, but the twists were brilliant and I didn't see them coming.
Enjoyable listen.

Nonsense times three

The main character doesn’t make sense - insanely judgy about her parents but ready to forgive her husband and herself. Characters not complete. Loose ends which don’t make sense. Story weak. Narrators of Celeste and Saylor annoying. listened to the end, though - so it was okay

Really fun once it gets going

To begin with I found the voices (particularly Celeste's breathy drawl) grating but I was interested in the story enough to push through. Most reviews say it takes ages to get going - around chapter 36 - and it does in that there is repetition within the monologue style reflections and the "oh me oh my I have a dreadful secret" style of thinking that got a bit irritating when all you want is for the plot to get moving!

I thought I had guessed some of the ending (and I had) but not all the of the final ties and ends - the twists weren't completely left field, which I feel is a sign of good writing, but there were some reveals that I didn't think of as well. it's super fast once the domino effects of the catalyst event gets going and I appreciated the way that the storylines were all tied up at the end.

A good listen

I was unsure at first, but it was an intriguing story that kept me listening to the end.

Irritating narration

Whoever reads Celeste’s part is awful!
She lowers her voice, by at least 2 octaves, at the end of each sentence!
Drove me mad.
Noticed it as soon as she spoke and detracted from the overall story!

So many lies!

It was hard to keep up at times as there were so many different characters and at some points some of the narration wasn't too clear with who was speaking. But the story was very captivating and gripping. So many lies told by different people, but the biggest lie came at the end of the book, which took me totally by surprise, and gave the book an interesting ending!
