Summary

Everyone tells her she's a survivor. No one knows she's dead inside.

Six years ago Melody Pieterson was attacked and left for dead. She coped by locking away her memories, burying herself. The man responsible was caught and convicted. Even his release from jail won't derail her new life. She's a survivor after all.

Then the body of another woman is discovered in identical circumstances. Like Melody, she has blond hair and green eyes. Like Melody she is found holding a gold bird cage chain. Her name is Eve Elliot.

The women were strangers, so Melody thinks. But Eve knew all about Melody's life. She'd been talking to her friends, she knew their secrets. She knew the man who attacked them had never been caught. Eve has left behind her story, the clues that will force Melody to confront her own lies and the lies she's been told. The clues that will put her life in danger all over again.

narrated brilliantly. the voices were believable and consistent.
Very impressed at how clever the story was written and the use of words describing things in such detail you could imagine yourself there!

Different

Slow start. Bit too much self analysis central character but enjoyed it. Became engrossed in it. Unusual. After all the early preamble, felt it ended abruptly with little follow through.

Not enough of a twist but good overall.

Didn't really get going and the end was a bit lacklustre. Not punchy or exciting enough for me. Only ever two suspects from the start so the end was a 50/59 and not a surprise. Still looking for a book that makes me jump around shouting as it unfurls. Sadly this isn't it.

Ruined by narrator

This may be a great book but I had to give up after a bland and grating narrator led me to give up. Really disappointed.

A really nice read, expected a longer ending!

East to listen too, the narrator does a relatively good job but not the best female to do make voices The build up was good but the ending very short and left me a little disappointed, maybe due to a second book??

This book should come with a me tap health warning

This book started with an unexplained death of a child's mother, then somebody found the body of a young girl and then it continues on about someone who struggles daily with living! I would have preferred a mental health warning before starting. I gave up at chapter five after not finding any hook at all to push me on, so sent it back!

Gripping

What did you like most about The Life I Left Behind?

I think I enjoyed this book more for listening to it through audible - the voices that the narrators allotted to each character were exactly how I would have expected. The concept is a great story, especially the telling of her own story and death by Eve.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eve was definitely my favourite character as I loved her fiesty nature. Her determination to get to the truth made the character in my mind more steely and focussed and I really didn't want her to succumb to the killer.

Have you listened to any of Imogen Church’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Loved it!

Really great story. The author manages to use a postmortem voice which is effective rather than the schmaltz of The Lovely Bones. Unusual mood to the story too.
