About this listen
A startling novel of childhood, secrets and a history that refuses to be buried from the author of the No 1 bestselling The Savage Garden - a must for any fan of William Boyd.
Ben Makepeace, a screenwriter, is recently divorced, with a young son to care for. So when he's invited up to Stoneham Park in Oxfordshire to meet someone who wants to bankroll his latest script, he jumps at the chance. Victor Sheldon is a hedge fund billionaire yet when Ben meets him he's bemused, for Victor is none other than old schoolfriend Daniel, last seen some twenty-five years ago. Victor is eager to introduce him to the various occupants of his Palladian home and Ben can't quite believe the great stroke of good fortune. But history can cast a long shadow, and soon Ben finds himself caught up in a vicious endgame with roots buried deep in the past of his childhood.

A slow burn ...in a good way
Builds gradually. Held my attention through to an uneasy and unusual climax. I loved it and am sorry I have finished it. This author never disappoints. I hope he writes another one soon.
The narration is very good too. Just right for this story, which could become a script. The narrator reads like an actor..

In a well
Would you try another book written by Mark Mills or narrated by Peter Kenny?
I like mark mills books and have read quite a few. But this audible books lets down the author, person who recorded it and the story. I cannot listen to this book for very long before it grates as it sound as if it has been recoded in a well. The sound is extremely poor. I am not sure I can do anything about it. I have tried to listen through headphones, speakers but it still sounds the same. Perhaps to download again might be the answer. Has anyone else experienced this?. 😕😕😕
