Summary

Helen Ross, a twenty-nine-year-old biologist, is sent to a sleepy Rocky Mountain ranching town to defend a pack of wolves from those who want to destroy them. For in Hope, Montana, a century ago, the wolf was slaughtered to extinction, and though they're now protected by law as an endangered species, the old hatred runs deep.

Alone in this hostile place, bruised by a broken love affair, Helen struggles for self-esteem and survival, embarking on a dangerous alliance with the son of her most ferocious opponent, the brutal and charismatic Buck Calder.

Critic reviews

" The Horse Whisperer...conveyed a genuine and personal emotional charge which resonated with millions of readers. The Loop confirms that [Evans] is that rare phenomenon, a natural storyteller." ( Mail on Sunday)
"As good as Evans's first novel, The Horse Whisperer...total entertainment." ( Daily Telegraph, Australia)
"Drama...power...passion." ( The Times)

My favourite book!

I love this book. Last time i read it I was just a teenager...
And now it brought so much emotions which I didn't understand back then...
Nicholas Evan has amazing talent to write lightly yet brings so much emotions to every of his book. The loop as far is my favourite...

Thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Laurel's performance is easily listened to, and this story is perfect for me. Wolves. Conservation. Lost souls. And the spectacular backdrop of Montana. It's got me looking into wolf tracking trips in Yellowstone. Which is going to cost me a lot more than this thoroughly enjoyable audible book. I've been inspired.

Sad but wonderful

I read this book years ago and was looking for an easy listen. I remembered that I really enjoyed reading it (just like the Horse Whisperer)but I couldn’t remember much about it apart from the wolves. I absolutely loved listening to the story. I think the narrator has the characters just right - although the Luke in my head was quite different. It’s traumatic and sad but also fantastic. I loved it again.

Recommended by a friend

I found this on audible after seeing it on a friend's bookshelf and she told me a little about it. I finished it in a week! I couldn't put it down! A captivating true to life story of wolves and the people who come into contact with them.

A beautiful story that is beautifully written and narrated.
I genuinely cared about the characters and the author bought the setting to life so much that I want to visit.

A beautiful book

I've read this book twice now, and decided to reread it via audible. It's one of my favourite books and Nicholas Evans is my favourite author. Compelling, dramatic, heart wrenching, heart warming and relatable. As ever Evans' detailing is brilliant and you'll be drawn in by each of the characters including the four legged ones. I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to this novel a second time and have been just as drawn in and unable to switch off as I was the first time reading.

Fantastic!

Certainly not my usual choice of book, but really is one of my all time favourites. I worry about the characters when I am not listening, desperate to get back to my headphones to find out what happens next. Just loved it.

Loved the book, loved the audio version.

I was so pleased to see that one of my favourite books had been added to Audible. The narrator reminded me of Michelle Obama and has a beautiful voice. I thoroughly enjoyed listening. Highly recommended.
