Summary

The second instalment of Tolkien's epic tale, adapted from the original BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation. Having fled the Shire in their escape from Sauron's Dark Riders, Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring have journeyed to Rivendell and beyond. Their mission is to reach the Mountain of Fire in Mordor, where the Ruling Ring can be destroyed, but already their campaign is in jeopardy. Gandalf has fallen into an abyss, and Boromir has fatally succumbed to the power of the Ring. The others are besieged by an army of orcs - save for Frodo and Sam, whose journey down the River Anduin is being watched by a dark and shadowy figure....

Widely regarded as a broadcasting classic, the BBC Radio dramatisation of 'The Lord of the Rings' stars Ian Holm, Michael Hordern, Robert Stephens, John Le Mesurier and Peter Woodthorpe.

Part Two of my life long companion

Having first listened to this when I was 13, now 40 years ago I cannot describe the feeling of hearing it once again. It is simply amazing.

BBC version is Excellent

I recall listening to these when I was a teenager. Just as good now. But such a pity so much removed from the original books.

wonderful

I adored all three books. But it's a bit annoying that you have to buy it in 3 separate sections - using 3 credits! but it's worth it.

A real classic

Does anyone else think Shelob sounds like Mr Blobby for the Noel Edmunds show in the 90s?

I had to fast forward the Gollum parts

It’s an excellent audiobook but I found the Gollum parts just too annoying. I thought the whining and screaming was excessive and very irritating. It spoiled the experience a bit for me.

Extraordinary

They simply don’t make them like this anymore. The pool of old school talent, grouped together and conducted perfectly makes for a masterpiece. Bravo.

Should be longer

It should be longer as it’s only like 4h long and that’s not how long it is.the performance was good and the story was amazing as usual but they should read all of it.
